In an intimate event at their offices in Hatfield on July 2, the Mzantsi Jazz Awards Company (MJAC) announced the nominees for the 2nd instalment of their prestigious jazz awards.
“The list is much bigger than it was last year and we have a lot more variety in terms of styles, approaches and idioms of jazz” said the Chairperson of the MJAC.
People like Bassist Ariel Zamonsky, Pianist Thandi Ntuli and young saxophonist Kamohelo Judas Mthimkulu made it onto an elite list of the who’s who of the South African Jazz scene.
There are 12 categories in 208 as opposed to 10 in 2017, including Best radio station playing Jazz, Best Newcomer and Best Jazz venue or Club. For the first time stations like Kaya FM, Metro FM and Community Radio Station Alex FM are competing on the same roster for the sought after recognition as radio stations that play and support jazz.
Legendary music stalwart Dorothy Masuka and Ntate Mabi Thobejane of the Molombo fame as well Selaelo Selota have been nominated for the Lifetime achievement Award.
