Food delivery apps are now an integral part of our daily lives – and Valentine’s Day, traditionally a night out – is no exception with more and more happy couples choosing to have their romantic dinner delivered. Valentine’s Day proved yet again to be one of Mr D Food’s busiest week days of the year. This Valentine’s Day saw Mr D Food orders grow by 150% compared to last year, with over 3500 new customers signing up to the pioneering food delivery service.
The most ordered item to celebrate amour this year? The humble burger was the most in-demand food for lovers everywhere, with Indian being the most popular cuisine in Joburg, healthy meals being Cape Town’s top choice and pizza being Durban’s favourite Valentine’s meal.
Devin Sinclair, Head of Mr D Food says, “It’s always fascinating to see what food trends emerge on big occasions like Valentine’s Day. It’s become one of the biggest days of the year for us, with the growth in orders and new sign-ups clearly indicating an upsurge in couples getting food delivered and staying in for their romantic rendezvous. It’s a further indication of the rising popularity of food delivery in the country as “on demand” digital services become a part of people’s daily lives.”
Here are some of the stats from this year’s Valentine’s Day:
1. The most expensive order in 2019 was R3 171.50. That’s 40% more than the most expensive order in 2018.
2. Men took the title for being the top tippers in 2019 while women took the title last year with the highest tip being R111.32 in 2018.
3. On average people in Johannesburg spent more per order than the rest of South Africa.
4. In order to get all the meals delivered, Mr D Food drivers covered the same distance as driving around the world 3 times!
Sinclair concludes, “We’d like to thank all our customers’ for letting us be part of your celebration this Valentine’s Day. We hope we helped make your day extra special.”
