Long Beach Kommetjie put its best foot forward on the final day of the BOS Cape Crown presented by Billabong producing perfect 3 to 4 foot surf in light offshore conditions which brought a successful joint SA Surf Tour and event to an impressive conclusion.
In the WSL QS1000 Pro Junior Boy’s Division, Kommetjie brothers Jake and Max Elkington finished first and second and fellow Kom locals Ford Van Jaarsvelt and Eli Beukes were third and fourth respectively. Jake Elkington retains his spot as the WSL ratings leader after his win yesterday.
The JQS1,000 Pro Junior Girls title went to Sophie Bell of Salt Rock who edged Kommetjie local Summer Sutton into second place in the dying seconds of the final. Kayla Nogueira of uMhlanga came third and Sarah Ingram of Constantia was fourth.
The 3 A rated SA Surf Tour U16 Boys final was a triumph for Dillen Hendricks of Pellsrus near Jeffreys Bay. Surfing in the green Sea Harvest vest, the JBay goofy footer dominated the final from the beginning as he gave a commanding performance on the Long Beach lefts.Eli Beukes put up a strong fight but Hendricks had the edge and the Kommetjie local had to settle for second. Another Kommetjie surfer, York Van Jaarsveldt, was third and Durban visitor Saxton Randall came fourth.
Honours in the U16 Girls Final went to the incredibly talented Kayla Nogueira. Although only just 14, Nogueira has made her mark in all contests this year. Tayla de Coning of East London came second and continued her run of success this year while local girl Summer Sutton was third and Maya Shefer Boswell was fourth.
Daniel Emslie of East London earned gold with a strong win in the U14 Boys division and Luke Thompson took silver ahead of fellow Durban surfer Nate Spalding. Luke van Wyk of Constantia took fourth spot.
Ceara Knight of Kommetjie celebrated a maiden SAST victory when she beat her good friends Caroline Brown of Hout Bay and Leila Steytler of Kommetjie into second and third place respectively. East London visitor Aimee Du Preez was fourth.
In the U12 final Kyra Bennie of Vredehoek secured his third SAST win of the year while CJay Posthumus of Port Elizabeth took second spot. River Gericke of the Wilderness was third and Sergio Nogueira of uMhlanga was fourth.
Surfers in the U12 to U16 Divisions competed for prizemoney and ratings points on the SA Surf Tour as well as qualification for annual awards and national teams. Ratings points in the WSL Pro Junior Division count towards the 2017 WSL Africa titles, the 18-and-under titles in the 20th annual Billabong Junior Series, qualification for the WSL World Junior Championships in Australia in January next year and qualification for the SA Junior Squad from which the SA Team for the ISA World Junior Championships in Japan in September will be selected.
Points from this event and other specified 3A SAST U16 events will be used for qualification for the Under 16 Boys and Girls SA Junior Squad which, along with their Under 18 counterparts, will attend the Sea Harvest Junior Camp in Port Alfred in July.
Over R50000 in total prize money was on offer at this contest along with ratings points on both the WSL and SAST.
