The first annual ECA(SA) Conference was aptly themed, Exploring Energy Efficiency. Held at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre on Monday 12 November 2012, the conference was the third part of the overall ECA(SA) Presidential Excellence Awards programme. The brainchild of outgoing ECA(SA) President, Mark Mfikoe, the idea for the two-day event was borne at the end of 2011.
The key sponsors all came on board to present on issues within the energy saving environment. Eskom detailed the rebate structure for energy saving installations and unpacked the tariff system. Eaton Electric SA confirmed that energy saving is a philosophy and needs to be part of an organisation’s culture. To do this absolute measurement and control is needed. Global body, KNX, provided an international perspective and called on delegates to align with manufacturers that have a forward focus, integrating sustainability and efficiency into the products that are produced. The speaker pointed out that each person must be responsible for the energy wastage in their own environment.
Sponsor, Brother SA, showed how their worldwide initiative Brother Earth is impacting on environmentally conscious labelling and new product development, through their positive attitude and commitment to the planet.
The Copper Development Association Africa, also a sponsor of the Awards process, highlighted the need for the safe use of copper in electrical installations. Copper cabling is most used in the electrical industry and as such the Association has a deep interest in talking to ECA(SA) members.
Panel discussions around alternative energy sources and the future of lighting completed a successful day of conferencing that culminated in the annual ECA(SA) AGM.
