There are few cities in the world like Johannesburg. It may not have the mountain or the big five roaming about but this vibrant urban jungle is constantly evolving and creating new adventures and attractions to entertain residents and tourists alike.
A particularly unique attraction is the growing adventure sports scene. Gauteng has invested heavily in positioning itself as an attractive sports tourism destination with world-class infrastructure and a comprehensive sports offering. Johannesburg itself is home to many sporting events, but few capture the soul of the city like the Hollard JUMA & Hollard JURA.
The Hollard JUMA and Hollard JURA are cycling and trail running events that tantalisingly combine the urban and natural elements to form a unique perspective on Johannesburg. These events bring their own urban spin on the adventure sports narrative giving runners and cyclists a glimpse of Johannesburg’s hidden treasures.
One of those hidden treasures is what lies beyond the city lights and high-rise buildings – an extensive green belt and the natural and man-made waterways forming the heartbeat of this concrete jungle.
Russell Willis, Event Organiser gives some insight into what these events have to offer locals and travellers, “If you’re into adventure sports like trail running and mountain biking these events are a once in a lifetime experience. Participants get to explore places in Johannesburg you’d never imagined were there. From a secret Waterfall in Melville to the giant open-air storm water drains decorated in graffiti. There are no other events quite like this in the world, so it’s definitely something worth travelling for.”
Johannesburg competes on a continental and global scale, constantly having to innovate and push forward onto new frontiers to remain a pioneer on the continent. That same gritty determination is necessary during these events. Coming out on top will require competitors to push themselves as they compete, not only against each other but against the city itself.
If you want to cycle through the soul of the city at the Hollard JUMA or traverse it on foot at Hollard JURA, the events take place on the 2nd and 3rd of June 2018. For more information visit www.joziadventure.co.za
