JOHANNESBURG – THE Office National X-treme Chair Race’s inaugural event found resounding success recently at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit. In partnership with the QuadPara Association of South Africa (QASA), the event raised enough money to purchase eight new wheelchairs, and met its objective of raising awareness about mobility devices and challenges facing quadriplegics and paraplegics in South Africa.
Wihan Oosthuizen managing director of Office National Africa says, “The Office National X-treme Chair Race is important for awareness because it’s hard to believe that in this day and age, there are parents who still walk kilometres carrying their child on their back to school. When they become too heavy, they are house bound because they don’t have a wheelchair and all efforts to get them educated are lost.”
The X-treme Chair Race brought together over 40 teams, comprising a minimum of 10 participants in each team, to battle it out over 200 metre relay sprints. The winners employed speed, style, and stealth to come out in the lead.
“Despite the rain, over 1 000 spectators came out to enjoy the day, which saw an F1 theme boosting spirits, as well as teams winning prizes for the ‘best dressed’ chair,” says Oosthuizen.
What is set to become an annual event offers a wonderful team-building opportunity for corporations, while raising awareness within the community to ensure that the QASA can supply mobility devices to more and more people in need
