Hundreds of female runners along the Garden Route took to the streets of George at the weekend to raise money for charity. The inaugural Heather Park SUPERSPAR Sunrise Challenge saw almost 400 participants take full advantage of perfect weather conditions to raise R5 000 for special needs school Up With Down’s on Saturday. The women-only event – which followed an undulating course through the suburbs of Heather Park and Rooirivier Rif – offered 5km, 10km and 2km relay options. “We decided to hold a women’s race as we wanted to do something different,” said Heather Park SUPERSPAR owner Duncan Brown. “We also wanted to add a fun element, so men were allowed to enter if they were dressed in drag.” Brown said pupils from the school held a market day at Heather Park SUPERSPAR every Thursday to raise funds and this gave him the idea to use the race as a platform to support their efforts. He said they were hoping to attract more than a thousand runners to next year’s event. “Our aim is to help people in our area while having some fun, but we need the support of the community.” Race organiser Danie Raubenheimer, from the George Nedbank Running Club, said planning for next year’s event would start soon and that businesses and schools would be their main focus. “We would also like to get more top athletes to take part because children love to see their heroes in action.” The prize for the best-dressed male went to Jan Nel while the Purple Turtles was voted the best-dressed relay team. From the 26th of October to the 7th of December, McDonalds Port Elizabeth will be donating R1 to Operation SMILE Madiba Bay every time you upsize your fries. The initiative will be supported by all the Port Elizabeth franchises and will be implemented in association with Kingfisher FM. McDonalds has committed to donating up to a total of R 20 000 to the organisation and encourages the public to participate. Each Port Elizabeth store will have a Chip Meter inside so that the public are able to track the store’s donation to date. First National Bank has announced that it will forge new sponsorship trails as official prize money sponsor to the Rocky Mountain Garden Route 300 mountain bike race, which takes place around Knysna in February next year. Race organiser Louise Wilson of Garden Route Events said the financial institution’s involvement was “massively exciting” as it meant that the prize purse would almost double for the third edition of the three-day event. Wilson said the R70 000 cash injection would enable them to attract some of the country’s top riders and grow the 300km race, which was recently rated as offering the best value for money per kilometre in an online poll. She said R50 000 would go to the overall winners, while the remaining R20 000 would be given away in three daily lucky draws, affording all entrants the chance to walk away as winners. “Good sponsorship is essential to maintain the level of service mountain bikers have come to expect from our stage races.” According to FNB provincial head for the Western Cape, Stephan Claassen, the institution preferred to avoid high-profile sports and rather took the road less travelled when it came to sponsoring events. “First National Bank believes in investing in sponsorships that will contribute to the development of the community as a whole,” said Claassen. The Expedition draws hundreds of participants each year, with a 40km trail for less experienced riders, and the full 80KM for serious competitors. “This year the last big climb with 20km to go has been removed, and this makes the racers upfront a bit nervous because of fewer attacking options, and it is sure to add to the challenge. The short kicker climbs in the valley around the dam will also “burn matches” if you push too hard.” The KZN expedition takes riders through breath-taking scenery around the Valley of 1000 Hills, and is popular with riders who enjoy being out in nature. “Riding through the valley is something really special; it really feels as if you are far away from any big city and in the middle of the bush. Two years ago, the South African Post Office released a series of stamps featuring artworks executed in traditional African beadwork. The original beadwork pieces selected and the newly issued stamps can be seen in the exhibition entitled The 8th Definitive Series of Stamps: The luminous beauty of South African beadwork on Stamps at the Iziko South African National Gallery until 11 November 2012 The beaded works of art used on the stamps and other philatelic products were selected exclusively from the permanent collections of the Art and Social History Collections departments at Iziko Museums of South Africa. The 8th Definitive Stamp Series of Stamps acknowledges the beauty and aesthetic value of South African beadwork. The exhibition showcases seven stamp designs, postcards, an aerogramme, different self-adhesive stamp-booklets and an illustrated coffee-table book, as well as commemorative covers and cancellers. The entire series was designed by the Philatelic Services of the South African Post Office. “The stamps portray culturally significant items over time in South African society,” says Johan van Wyk, head of Philately at the South African Post Office. “They range from a traditional Tsonga fertility figure, to a modern bead cellphone rendered in beadwork.” Iziko Museums of South Africa is proud of the seven-year collaboration to select, advise, research and facilitate the photography of the beadwork adornment from its collections, which is also on display. Photographed by Sasha Lipka, the stamps focus on detail rather than the whole item. “The small stamp format lent itself best to photographs focusing on selected details of a particular item, instead of images of entire items,” says Van Wyk. The winning teams of the 2012 Spur Masidlale soccer league were treated to an unforgettable experience when they took the field as mascots for Orlando Pirates this weekend. Both the Sapebuso girls’ and boys’ teams finished top of the log in their categories and walked off with the 2012 Soweto Spur Masidlale championship trophies and the grand prize, which included lunch at the Spur and a PSL mascot experience. After being treated to a terrific meal at Wild Spear Spur in Soweto they arrived at Orlando Stadium in high spirits on Sunday. Emotions were running high and excitement levels reached fever pitch as the kids were ushered into the stadium singing and dancing. After donning their Orlando Pirates kit, they were ready for action and had the once-in-a-lifetime experience of walking through the tunnel onto the pitch. Both Orlando Pirates and Amazulu shared the enthusiasm of the young soccer stars and joined in with singing and clapping – making the kids beam with joy. A total of 400 learners from ten primary schools in Orlando battled it out during the league and although the competition was fierce, the hard work, team spirit and good soccer skills secured the top spot for Sapebuso Primary. A delegation from the Hungarian Embassy led by Hungarian ambassador Mr Bela Laszlo and his wife Julia, Honorary Consul Andre Pelser and the Deputy Head of the Consul Mission visited the wine estate to personally taste and select the wines to be served during the reception. The Unlimited Dusi Charity Batch is an online bidding system, which allows paddlers the opportunity to bid for a position in an earlier starting batch each day with all bids being donated to charity. A daily head start offers a huge competitive advantage as the paddlers will be out on the water earlier to beat the midday sun and will also avoid the congestion as more batches set off from the starting line. The National Arts Festival, Grahamstown is now accepting applications for Fringe productions wanting to take part in the 2013 edition of the Festival. The Festival will take place from 27 June to 7 July 2013. The National Arts Festival Fringe is unique in South Africa in that no selection criteria are applied – participation in the Fringe is open to everyone. The Fringe has mushroomed in size since its inception in 1979 when a diminutive 10 events comprised the Fringe – it now consistently boasts over 400 events across all the arts genres. Disciplines include children’s theatre, film, comedy, drama, physical theatre, dance, cabaret, visual art, performance poetry, music theatre, and the full scope of music genres. “As always, we’re looking forward to programming an exciting selection of productions.
