Health & safety principles, more than just a document – Servest’s Lucky Ncayiyana takes SHEQ to a whole new level

At Servest, (SHEQ) quality management is a non-negotiable imperative, in delivering the work the company does for their clients; and in sustaining its own reputation as an integrated services company. SHEQ management is applied across the broad spectrum of Servest’s services, including security, cleaning, parking, catering, hygiene, office services and landscaping.
SHEQ management, is a technical field that applies to several disciplines for compliance and continued improvement of occupational Safety, Health, Environment and Quality factors that impact any organisation.
Lucky Ncayiyana is the SHEQ Manager for Servest’s Landscaping and Turf division and his role entails providing strategic leadership and direction to all colleagues, which extends beyond the Landscaping division, such as the driving support in SHEQ programs and initiatives throughout the wider organisation.
In Landscaping specifically however, safety is a critical component, as the equipment is technically complex and often entails a high risk in handling it. This means assessing inherent risks to these high-tech machines, as well as controlling the exposure of hazardous substances to colleagues, while keeping landscapes (whether these be golf courses, stadiums, or gardens to name a few) at their best. Among the many initiatives in the division, Lucky is also responsible for rolling out in-house driver awareness training nationally, to help up-skill drivers of security vehicles on the road and curb vehicle related accidents.
This risk based SHEQ management approach, ensures uniformity and standardisation across regions. Monitoring and evaluation of the system is performed by means of using various platforms, including, but not limited to;
- Toolbox talks, which are given at the beginning of each shift. These talks cater to specific topics of health and safety.
- Training and induction initiatives for all new colleagues, with yearly refresher sessions for all colleagues.
- Periodic safety file reviews.
“In Landscaping, we outsource some activities, which require managing contractors to meet Servest’s standards of service delivery. Therefore, contractor management processes are adhered to at all times, with specific focus on contractor competency, verification of relevant documentation and monitoring of their work” says Lucky.
In many businesses, policy documents are put in place to safeguard the organisation with regards to accountability issues or activities, however in the case of Servest, these policies are guidelines that are prescribed, to not only protect the organisation, but more importantly, the colleagues performing the tasks.
“We don’t have the luxury of being lackadaisical about processes, as it is the lifeblood of our organisation and industry as a whole. Our clients trust that our internal, as well as contractor protocol processes are in place, one hundred percent, all the time, at any time,” says Lucky.
Whilst Servest’s practices and policies are targeted towards processes, colleagues are consistently reminded that they are in the business of people.
