Port Elizabeth: Sunday 16 December 2012, sees the start of the 2012 About IT Triathlon Summer Series, a 3-part sprint distance triathlon Series, with round 1 being the popular Summies to Sards Triathlon.
Starting at 8am at Pollok Beach, a mixture of social and competitive teams and individuals will kick off with a 750m which is then followed by a 20km cycle to Schoenmakerskop and ends with a 5km trail run along the Sacramento Trail taking runners from Schoenies through to Sardinia Bay and back again.
“The Summer Series Series has been around for over a decade now and each year it grows, this year we are focusing on building the interest in the team category which offers non-triathletes the opportunity to take part in the sport whilst combining with their friends, family or collegues,” said Series organiser Mike Zoetmulder of Zports. “The sprint distance consists of a 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run which is achievable for most novice sports enthusiasts.”
Already confirmed for Sunday’s event is SA rugby legend Ollie le Roux who last year completed the Series with close friend and former World pole vault champion Okkert Britz who lives in PE. This fun triathlon, sanctioned by Eastern Province Triathlon, attracts hundreds of participants each year and is followed up with another on Sunday 23rd December before the Series concludes on Boxing Day (26th) at Port St Francis.
About IT, new naming sponsors of the Series, is a national company offering tailor-made Information Technology solutions and have keenly invested in the promotion of water sport based events in Nelson Mandela Bay this season. With a local branch that is very active in the sporting scene, About IT are excited to be associated with the Triathlon Summer Series which offers elite and social participants the opportunity to get out there and have fun this December.
The event is expected to attract over 150 participants for round 1 which will see the swimmers doing a 750m swim in the ocean before heading into transition to tag their cyclist or jump onto their bike in the case of individuals. The cyclists will then cycle from Summerstrand to Schoenmakers Kop before setting off on the 5km trail run through the Sacramento Trail. An exciting aspect of the Series is that the organisers try and offer participatns something different to what they may expect with traditional triathlon’s, ensuring a mixture of fun and excitement.
The first 200 participants to register online (www.trisummerseries.co.za) will each receive a 2012 Series t-shirt. Non licensed triathlete’s are required to pay a once-off Series temporary license of just R70.
