In support of World Hunger Day on 28 May, KFC urged customers to Double Up their Add Hope donations and double the difference it makes to the plight of the millions of South African children who go to bed hungry every night. Our customers generously responded by doubling up their R2 donations, donating over R1 million towards the fight against hunger over the two week Add Hope Double Up campaign. “The Add Hope Double Up campaign was an opportunity to increase awareness of the prevalence of hunger in South Africa and to illustrate the impact it will have on our country’s future if we don’t do something about it,” says Thabisa Mkhwanazi, KFC South Africa Marketing Director. “The success of Add Hope shows that South Africans want to get involved and that if we all pull together, even the smallest contribution can have a major impact.“ Add Hope has raised over R300 million in funds to secure the future of South Africa by helping children learn, grow and thrive through providing them with a nutritious meal, every day. Add Hope makes sure that over 100 000 children receive nutritious meals every month, with the help of 110 beneficiary partners around the country. The collaboration between KFC, its beneficiaries and its customers is vital in fighting hunger and the total donated to these beneficiary organisations increases every year. As part of this Double Up campaign, and in support of World Hunger Day, a number of prominent South Africans visited Add Hope beneficiary organisations to get a first-hand experience of the incredible impact the donations have on young lives. Actress Hlubi Mboya visited Afrika Tikkun in Diepsloot, Gauteng. “These children have my heart. Food, education and shelter are basic human rights. It’s powerful to see the impact that Add Hope has on places like Afrika Tikkun and on these young lives and it is a blessing that places like these are open to the vulnerable. I was completely blown away by all the facilities, and the energy, positive and . . .
York High survived a tense round-robin phase to emerge triumphant in the Southern Cape leg of the SPAR Eastern Cape Schoolgirls Hockey Challenge in George on Saturday. The George team will now join the other regional winners - Collegiate (PE Coastal), DSG (PE Inland), Hudson Park (EL Coastal) and Kingsridge (EL Inland) - in the Eastern Cape final at Woodridge just outside Port Elizabeth on August 13. On another exciting day of schoolgirls hockey, in which six schools competed for the title, York lost their opening match and had to win their final game to stand a chance of contesting the final. They duly won their last pool game to edge Langenhoven Gymnasium for a place in the final and rode that momentum to defeat Oakhill, from Knysna, 1-0 in the 25-minute encounter. Anushka September was voted the most promising umpire and rewarded with a hamper from hockey equipment supplier Grays. Eastern Cape tournament director Peter Wilson said it had been another fantastic festival of schoolgirls hockey. "It was a magnificent day. Everyone appreciated the SPAR sponsorship and the girls enjoyed the chance to play on the Outeniqua High astro." The tournament was started six years ago in KwaZulu-Natal by former SA women's hockey manager Les Galloway and has since been introduced in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape. Galloway, now the national tournament director, believed the concept was here to stay. "We have been blown away by the reception we have received in all the regions. The tournament has created massive excitement among the players and supporters." She said the exposure was exciting for the girls and the sport and had unearthed some really good hockey talent in the region. "I'm super excited about how the tournaments have gone and am obviously looking forward to making it a long-term project." Wilson thanked the hosts for their assistance as well as SUPERSPAR Heather Park for handling the catering on the day. The final placings . . .
Online entries for the 2016 Momentum Weekend Argus Knysna Cycle Tour are open and tour director Elwin Thompson says that the Knysna Rotary Club, which coordinates the tour every year, is looking forward to the biggest and best event ever. “The race, which celebrates its 29th year in 2016, has grown enormously since its inception and now comprises four very popular events – MTB events, road races, the SPUR Children’s Tour and the Forest Family Dam Ride. These take place on 2 and 3 July over the first weekend of the Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival (1-10 July 2016).” The MTB event is one of the biggest in southern Africa and includes outstanding cycling routes through the Knysna forest. The 50 km and 80 km MTB races are official premier seeding events of the 2017 Cape Town Cycle Tour. There are four different MTB races in total for varying technical abilities - 80 km, 50 km, 30 km and 15 km, and routes include access to privately owned sections of property that are usually closed to the public. Says Thompson: “The routes are set up and managed by Leon Evans, known as Dr Evil and, while cyclists will be riding through one of the most scenic areas in the Garden Route, they will also have their skills tested to the maximum. “The 109 km road race follows a new route introduced in 2014 which was designed for enthusiastic, competitive roadies and will keep you working all the way to the finish line.” The route takes cyclists from Knysna to Sedgefield to Kleinkranz and back to Knysna. The 50 km route is from Knysna to Sedgefield and back along the N2. The SPUR Rotary Knysna Children's Cycle Tour is a safe, scenic race for children from 2 to 10 years of age and consists of three events which start and finish at the Knysna Oyster Festival Grounds, for 2-4 year olds, 5-7 year olds and 8-10 year olds. The George Municipal library will be restocking its shelves thanks to the studious efforts of the Fancourt National Book Week donation drive. Forming part of its corporate social investment projects, Fancourt has donated 684 books to the local community library. Donated by Fancourt members, staff, the local community and scholars from Laerskool George-Suid, the books come in a variety of both fiction and non-fiction titles, ranging from works by acclaimed South African authors Wilbur Smith and Andre P Brink, to the Afrikaans Barbie series for children! National Book Week is an initiative driven by the South African Book Development Council (SABDC) in collaboration with the Department of Arts and Culture. Reading statistics in South Africa report that only 14% of the South African population are active book readers, and a mere 5% of parents read to their children. National Book Week is therefore an important initiative in encouraging the nation to value reading as a fun and pleasurable activity, showcasing how reading can easily be incorporated into one’s lifestyle. @FANCOURTSA @FiveStarPRZA Author: Roxanne FIVESTAR PR from FIVESTAR PR.
