Moreover, an air conditioner allows you to maintain your desired room temperature more effectively too,” says McKechnie. “Consumers may be concerned that an air conditioner will use more power, but even this is not necessarily the case. Our products have a built in inverter that sets the appliance to idle once the room reaches optimal temperature, switching on again only if the temperature drops below this level. A new SPAR retail outlet opened its doors in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday, with the first customers welcomed by fanfare and opening specials. Partners Jill and Guy White, assisted by SPAR Eastern Cape's director of retail operations Mike de st Pern, cut the ribbon late morning to signal the official start of business for SPAR Oak Cottage. Unperturbed by the icy morning, a group of customers excitedly queued outside the store on African Street to make sure they were first to sample the new offering. "We wanted to give our Grahamstown customers a great shopping experience," said White, who also owned the KWIKSPAR that used to be on the premises. "We've been trying to get a nice big SPAR in Grahamstown for the past nine years. We outgrew the old one quickly." White said the development of the new SPAR had taken a year and half, but she was thrilled with the result. "We've created a theatre here; there's a lot on offer in addition to the usual groceries." The new shop features a pizza oven, fresh burgers made on demand, pancakes, a smoothie bar and a Bean Tree Café for coffee lovers. White said SPAR Oak Cottage - which opened just in time for the National Arts Festival from June 30 to July 10 - would serve the community 24 hours per day, seven days a week. A contemporary look at the historical seems to dominate the 2013 series of Visual Art Exhibitions presented at the National Arts Festival, Grahamstown. In her new solo exhibition titled The purple shall govern, Standard Bank Young Artist for Visual Art Mary Sibande draws inspiration from a specific incident in South Africa’s history where, in the late 1980s, people were marching for equality in Cape Town. During the march, the police sprayed everyone with a water cannon laced with purple dye to enable them to identify and arrest anti-apartheid protestors. This act motivated Mary’s interest in the roles that colour played in the history of this country. Colour remains a predominant factor in our social interactions and it continues to play a dominant role in our percept ions of one another as South Africans. In Sibande’s view it is like a monster that we are all too familiar with. On a personal level, this new work comes full circle as Mary connects it back to her very first exhibition, where she displayed a figure - that represented her – in purple attire. The purple shall govern presents the next chapter, in which Sibande speaks of her own aspirations, desires, fears and anxieties of being a woman. The concept of rebirth, where she refers to the idea of transitioning from the person you were before into a new or different idea of yourself – death and rebirth – is extensively explored. For the first time, the photographs of anti-apartheid photographers, Benny Gool, Zubeida Vallie and Adil Bradlow, who, as young photographers and friends, were to be found with their cameras documenting apartheid South Africa, is brought together in a group exhibition entitled Martyrs, Saints and Sellouts; which attempts to facilitate creative thinking between the lines of emancipation, liberty and freedom. The South African Post Office has announced the sponsorship of the Student Theatre Festival at Grahamstown’s National Arts Festival running from 28 June to 8 July 2012. Over the years the Student Theatre Festival has developed into an indispensable part of the National Arts Festival programme and has become renowned for showcasing South Africa’s next generation of performing artists. As part of the sponsorship the SA Post Office, in partnership with the Student Theatre Festival, will provide 16 tertiary institutions from across the country with the opportunity to take part in the Festival. The sponsorship investment covers travel, meals, accommodation, miscellaneous items, and production expenses for the total of 160 students. The institutions have been invited to present a production in Grahamstown in any South African language and use a multiplicity of artistic expressions or genres in the creation of their work. On 6 July 2012 an awards ceremony will take place to recognise the most outstanding and exceptional of these productions. The institution that presents the most acclaimed production in the opinion of the Student Theatre Advisors will be awarded a budget to create a theatre-in-education production based on the theme of philately. The content for the production will be designed in conjunction with subject matter experts from the South African Post Office.
