With Earth Day on 22 April and World Book Day on 23 April, the Paper Manufacturers Association of South Africa (PAMSA) is highlighting the importance of paper in our lives and environment, and calling on us to put down our phones and pick up a book. Imagine a world without paper Can you think about what that would mean? Think about your bedside table, the doctor’s waiting room or your handbag. There would be no books, magazines and to-do lists on the back of old envelopes. Open your kitchen cupboard – there would be no paper packaging nor labels, no kitchen towel, no milk and juice cartons. A world without paper would also mean no toilet paper or tissues. If you’re a teacher, look around your classroom. Take note of everything that is there from posters to artwork and assessments; egg boxes and cereal boxes waiting to be transformed into something creative; tissue boxes too. These would not be there if it were not for paper. Paper serves many needs Paper is essential, and often hidden in plain sight. It cleans, wipes and mops up spills. It protects goods on their journey from A to B, from cornflakes to computers. It preserves our words and memories when we print photos, write a birthday card or proudly display our child’s first stick man painting for all to see. It conveys and communicates. Paper is tactile and stimulates our senses. The act of turning pages and taking in the words without the distraction of pop-ads and fake news cannot be undervalued. A desire to support a worthy cause and a passion for cycling are behind Optimum Financial Services' commitment to the Bestmed Cycle4Cansa Championship at Sun City later this year. Joining the event as presenting sponsor, the Pretoria-based financial company will increase their backing this time, building on the R50 000 donation they made last year. Cycle4Cansa, which focuses on raising funds for the Cancer Association of South Africa, takes place on August 25 and 26 and incorporates road races and mountain-bike events. It is one of the longest-running cycling events in the country and will celebrate its 21st anniversary this year. Optimum Financial Services marketing director Werner Swanepoel, the former Springbok scrumhalf, said they had always been involved with the race but had upped their stake this year. "For a couple of years there has been an association with the event as one of the smaller sponsors, but we want to show a greater commitment this time," he said. "There are a number of keen cyclists in our company, including chief executive Louwrens Smith, and we feel this is a really good cause to support. "Sadly, Louwrens's mother died of cancer a while back but during that time he came to understand the incredible job that Cansa do to help those in need and we feel this is a great opportunity to give something back." Besides riding in the Cycle4Cansa event, Swanepoel and his colleagues demonstrated their passion for cycling by competing in the Bestmed Tour of Good Hope in the Cape Winelands last month, rated South Africa's top stage road race. He added that they wanted to build the company's brand after opening a branch in Cape Town recently. "In addition, being in the financial industry it is our business to promote a healthy lifestyle among all our clients. Setswana and Xitsonga readers can now enjoy the Nal’ibali supplements in their mother languages from mid-April 2018. The Bestmed Cycle4Cansa Championship at Sun City will celebrate its 21st anniversary this year with an attractive incentive for participants who enter before March 2. As the organisers strive to deliver a memorable experience when the weekend festival takes place on August 25 and 26, those who beat the early-bird deadline next month will receive a 15% discount. Announcing that entries were open, event organiser Mauritz Meyer said they were again looking forward to a weekend filled with cycling activities as they continued their association with the Cancer Association of South Africa. "This is one of the longest-running events on the South African calendar and we are again aiming to make a significant contribution to Cansa," said Meyer. "We have raised R4-million for the organisation over the years and obviously we are keen to support this very worthwhile cause." The organisers have introduced one minor change this time, hosting the event a week later than in previous years. "This prevents a clash with the annual Marikana memorial activities," said Meyer. "It means cyclists will be able to get to Sun City without having to worry about using alternative routes this year." He added that they would be sticking with the race routes they had used for the last two years. "The road-race route is fast and flat and has received only favourable feedback following the change to the traditional route in 2016."
