Netcare bursary for two doctors to be trained as Specialist Emergency Physicians: The field of emergency medicine, and particularly its practice in rural South Africa, will receive a boost this year with the training of two additional registrars in emergency medicine (EM), who will be deployed to the North West Department of Health after completion of their specialist training. “Two doctors, Dr Senzeni Kente and Dr Shivani Pillay, received bursaries from the Netcare Foundation to study further and qualify as specialists in EM to the benefit of the people in North West Province,” explains Mande Toubkin, Netcare’s general manager emergency, trauma, transplant and corporate social investment. “The two candidates will study through the University of the Witwatersrand’s Emergency Medicine Department, in partnership with the North West Province’s Department of Health.” North West MEC for Health, Dr Magome Masike welcomed the launch of the Emergency Medicine Registrar Programme as a step in the right direction in view of emergency medicine continuing to evolve. He expressed his belief that the programme would contribute to the success of the National Development Plan (NDP). “Key to the success will be the partnerships between government, the private sector and civil society, working together towards common objectives,” said Dr Masike. Dr Masike added that he always felt it would have far reaching benefit for the citizens in the North West province – both rural and urban, out-of-hospital and in-hospital, single and multiple patients transported by road or air ambulances – if the discipline of emergency medicine is established and developed. Drs Kente and Pillay will join the University of the Witwatersrand’s (Wits) Emergency Medicine registrar academic rotation to gain experience in both public and private sector hospitals. Bakwena N1N4 toll road held its 9th annual clean-up campaign in Swartruggens on Friday 16th October 2015. This annual event is one of many environmental initiatives that Bakwena is involved in along the N1N4 corridor. The aim of the campaign is to highlight to the children, the importance of caring for their environment. This year’s campaign also included the planting of two Trees of the Year (Willow Tree) at each school. Three schools took part in this green initiative, namely Kgetleng Primary, Swartruggens Intermediate and Reebone Secondary school. Two hundred learners from each school took to the area surrounding their school armed with gloves and rubbish bags provided by Bakwena to clean-up their school grounds & surrounds. Once again Kgetlend primary managed to bag the first prize of R5 500 for the most bags of rubbish which was a whopping 231 bags followed by Reebone Secondary who was a close second at 210 bags (R4 500) and third prize of R2500 went to Swartruggens Intermediate for 110 bags collected. Bakwena cares for the environment and strives to make a difference by raising awareness among our local community members about the importance of living in a litter free environment. Litter not only impacts on the appearance of our communities, it also has serious health and safety implications for both human and animal inhabitants alike. Bakwena N1N4 in partnership with PinkDrive and the Department of Health launched a women’s month campaign to raise awareness about breast, testicular and prostate cancer within the communities which surround the Platinum Highway in the North West province. The programme includes extensive education on the various types of cancers, early lump detection and clinical examinations. The campaign kicked off at the Dinokana Community Health Centre as well as Lehurutshe Clinic where 390 patients have been educated and examined. A further 1680 learners of the nearby high schools of Ntebogang, Ramotshere, N.R. Mandela and Moedwil were also afforded the opportunity to learn about the various types of cancers. Prior to the start of the campaign, 62 caregivers from the surrounding areas were trained on breast cancer education and examinations, to ensure that education is carried far and wide after the campaign period. The second phase of the rollout will take place at Ikalegeng Clinic in Zeerust on 17 and 18 August, Groot Marico Clinic on 19 August and Swartruggens Community Health Centre on the 20 and 21 August.
