The third Provincial Conference on Sport will focus on the role sport plays in society when it takes place from September 30 to October 1 at NMMU's George campus. Organised jointly by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, George Municipality, Eden Sport Council and NMMU, the theme of the conference is Olympism. The programme is structured around the four sub-themes of "Faster, Higher, Stronger", "Diversity and Inclusion", "Governance, Leadership and Administration" and "Infrastructure and the Role of Government". Madibaz Sport director Yoliswa Lumka said Olympism meant having a balanced lifestyle, especially between sport, education and culture. She said sport should not be seen in isolation, but as an integral part of developing people holistically. "Normally when these conversations happen it is just the sport practitioners in the room," she said. "We want to have this conversation with the municipalities, schools, universities, sport federations and athletes to fully understand where the need is and what the different entities can provide." A sponsorship injection from SPAR Eastern Cape is poised to boost the Keep Plett Clean campaign, a project started by concerned Plettenberg Bay residents three years ago. To ensure the popular tourist town maintained a high standard of cleanliness to keep bringing visitors back, local resident of 21 years Alison Bryant initiated the campaign in February, 2014. She said it had started with a small group of residents and had now gained momentum, with many locals involved. "The campaign is focused on working with the municipality, not only to keep the CBD neat and tidy, but to ensure the town's tourist image is not harmed," said Bryant. JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – 31 August, 2016 – Samsung Electronics Co. recently announced that all of its 2016 UHD TV models have attained the Ultra High Definition (UHD) TV certification from Digital Europe (DE), a collaborative body of European IT and consumer electronics businesses. Comprised of 62 corporate members and 37 National Trade Associations, DE is one of the most influential organisations representing the digital technology industry in Europe. According to Matthew Thackrah, Deputy Managing Director and Head of Consumer Electronics at Samsung Electronics South Africa, Samsung TVs, ranging from the 2016 SUHD TV lineup to the Series 6 UHD TVs, have all met the strict standards set for UHD TV certification as specified by DE. “These products will now carry the European UHD TV certification logo, as well as the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) label. Both certification labels will be on display on Samsung UHD TVs at this year’s IFA exhibition,” he explains. For certification purposes, DE has specifically defined a ‘pixel’ as the minimum picture resolution element capable of rendering the same luminance scale as the entire display.
