In a rugby obsessed nation such as South Africa one would think that additional playing (and earning) opportunities would be welcomed with open arms.
Along with greater exposure for the sport the support infrastructure would also stand to benefit – stadiums, tourism, accommodation, officials, media, support staff and the like all need to be found and paid to take part.
One hook that the MRL (Mzansi Rugby League) has over SARU is their Development Partner Program (DPP) which is slated to ensure that when a player succeeds, the institution that developed him succeeds too. Essentially the player transfer amounts will carry a ‘commission’ for the institution (school, university, club) that developed the player.
The MRL says that Development Partner Program (DPP) is how they say thank you to the institutions that shaped the players long before they arrived in the MRL…
