data-ssb-share-action=\"mailto\"><span class=\"simplesocialtxt\">Email<\/span><\/button>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some parts of the country, college sports \u2014 especially basketball and football \u2014 are more popular and more important to local communities than professional sports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means athletes who also happen to be students often encounter intense scrutiny from the news media and fans. Add sports betting into a cultural landscape where every first down and every missed bucket matters, and that scrutiny becomes more intense.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also means that college students can, in many states, bet on the games in which their classmates play. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.org\/student-athletes\/name-image-likeness\/\">name, image and likeness, or NIL, deals<\/a> in the mix, some athletes are paid hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars all the while opportunities to bet on sports are, seemingly, <a href=\"https:\/\/journalistsresource.org\/tag\/the-story-of-sports-betting\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/journalistsresource.org\/tag\/the-story-of-sports-betting\/\">everywhere<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We recently convened an hourlong webinar with <a href=\"https:\/\/econofact.org\/\">EconoFact<\/a>, a nonpartisan publication out of Tufts University, to help journalists gain nuance and understanding of how the vast availability of sports betting affects athletes and non-athletes in higher education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I moderated the discussion with <a href=\"https:\/\/as.tufts.edu\/economics\/people\/faculty\/michael-klein\">Michael Klein<\/a>, the William L. Clayton Professor of International Economic Affairs at Tufts and founder of EconoFact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We were joined by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brooklaw.edu\/contact-us\/balsam-jodi-s\/\">Jodi Balsam<\/a>, professor of clinical law and director of the Sports Law Clinic at Brooklyn Law School, and <a href=\"https:\/\/comm.osu.edu\/people\/kraft.42\">Nicole Kraft<\/a>, professor of journalism practice and director of the Sports and Society Institute at The Ohio State University.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-047e60da alignfull uagb-is-root-container\">\n<div class=\"uagb-container-inner-blocks-wrap\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MK5EZZLCYGs?si=BySM-EWRfYSX2tXy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We opened the hour discussing the case of Brendan Sorsby, a former college quarterback who placed thousands of sports wagers worth at least $90,000 from 2022 to 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/49101081\/cincinnati-denies-agent-claim-knew-sorsby-gambling\">according to<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sorsby-texas-tech-ncaa-1442b15003d20edfed0153df5e47e284\">multiple<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/outkick-sports\/brendan-sorsby-admits-wagering-nearly-90000-college-career-ncaa-fight-heats\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sorsby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/story\/_\/id\/47505128\/qb-brendan-sorsby-top-player-portal-commits-texas-tech\">had committed<\/a> to playing for Texas Tech in January, with an NIL deal estimated at about <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/articles\/texas-tech-makes-5-million-192658265.html\">$5 million<\/a>. After Sorsby\u2019s wagering became public, the NCAA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/college\/red-raiders\/2026\/05\/26\/texas-tech-football-brendan-sorsby-permanently-ineligible-lawrence-schovanec\/90266522007\/\">ruled him permanently ineligible<\/a> for violating the organization\u2019s rules on gambling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In early June, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7342306\/2026\/06\/09\/sympathetic-judges-college-court-cases-brendan-sorsby\/\">a district court judge<\/a> in Lubbock County, where Texas Tech is located, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sorsby-ncaa-gambling-7c233305b811029d16d63d2b3362e8a0\">ruled<\/a> that Sorsby would suffer \u201cirreparable injury\u201d if he were not allowed to play, effectively paving the way for the quarterback to take the field. The NCAA appealed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe theory of the appeal was that it would undermine the integrity of college sports, that it basically rewrites these member-adopted rules around sports integrity,\u201d Balsam said during the webinar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She added that the case didn\u2019t set legal precedent, but it was a \u201cwatershed moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have an individual who&#8217;s engaged in serial violations of NCAA anti-gambling rules, and it would incentivize a run on courthouses across the country to challenge basically any NCAA rule in the rulebook,\u201d Balsam said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NCAA\u2019s appeal was never resolved. Athletic directors at other prominent sports universities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/college-football\/news\/brendan-sorsby-fallout-georgia-nebraska-texas-tech-big-12-big-ten\/\">moved to boycott<\/a> Texas Tech. By mid-June, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/06\/11\/texas-tech-ken-paxton-brendan-sorsby-big-12\/\">Sorsby had left the school<\/a>. He tried to enter professional football, but the National Football League <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/49155446\/brendan-sorsby-supplemental-nfl-draft-declined\">denied him for 2026<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We covered much more during the hour and it\u2019s well worth your time to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MK5EZZLCYGs\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MK5EZZLCYGs\">watch the entire thing<\/a>. In addition, here are a few story ideas for reporting on these topics.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Investigate how gambling affects student mental health.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One angle to explore is how student-athletes cope with stressors related to the ubiquity of sports betting, such as messages and harassment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.org\/media-center-ncaa-study-finds-over-one-third-of-di-mens-basketball-student-athletes-harassed-by-bettors\/\">online and in person<\/a> from bettors who lose wagers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we&#8217;re seeing now is the vitriol that athletes experience just because people\u2019s team that they rooted for lost \u2014 that was bad enough \u2014 but now people are losing money,\u201d Kraft said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some harassment is directly related to prop bets, which are bets made on whether a specific player will hit or miss a mark \u2014 say, run for at least 100 yards in a football game, or score 20 or more points in a basketball game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because prop bets are linked to the performance of an athlete, rather than the team, they can fuel harassment of individual players.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finding athletes and college students who bet on sports and are willing to talk on the record can take time, Kraft said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA lot of it is about relationship building, which every reporter knows is not the easiest thing to do, especially in collegiate athletics,\u201d Kraft said. \u201cBut the more conversations you have with someone, the more likely they are to be willing to share that story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And some universities regularly perform surveys and outreach related to student wellness. It\u2019s worth investigating whether those surveys are asking enough about mental health harms related to sports betting among athletes and non-athletes alike \u2014 or whether they\u2019re asking about sports betting at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSimply having journalists ask questions about that might raise the sensitivity, so that [universities] track the issue more closely,\u201d Balsam said.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cover legislation and regulations on the horizon, especially around prop betting.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2024, Ohio gaming regulators banned prop bets on college sports. Officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-sports\/story\/_\/id\/39585392\/ohio-gaming-regulators-ban-betting-ncaa-player-props\">cited<\/a> links between prop betting and player harassment, and the NCAA had pushed for the ban.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several other states have restricted betting on college sports. Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, South Dakota, Washington and Wisconsin have banned bets on college teams from their states, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/state-legislatures-news\/details\/sports-betting-on-the-rise-as-states-let-gamblers-wager-online\">according to a 2024 report from the National Conference of State Legislatures<\/a>. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.in.gov\/igc\/files\/meetings\/2026-q2\/06-25-2026-Notice-Agenda.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.in.gov\/igc\/files\/meetings\/2026-q2\/06-25-2026-Notice-Agenda.pdf\">Indiana Gaming Commission<\/a> will meet in September to consider a ban on prop betting in college sports, according to Andrea Jimenez, a policy specialist with the NCSL. Since the 2024 report, Missouri has passed legislation allowing sports betting, but the state <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sports-betting-missouri-college-prop-bets-95975ec78c6495701686ea047d934ad7\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sports-betting-missouri-college-prop-bets-95975ec78c6495701686ea047d934ad7\">bans prop bets<\/a> on teams representing in-state colleges and universities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">States that to varying degrees ban prop betting on college sports, according to research Jimenez has conducted, include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kold.com\/2024\/03\/28\/arizona-athletes-gambling-experts-react-ncaa-president-calls-ban-college-player-props\/\">Arizona<\/a>, Florida, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports-betting\/story\/_\/id\/39868734\/louisiana-bans-prop-bets-college-players-starting-aug-1\">Louisiana<\/a>, Maryland, <a href=\"https:\/\/malegislature.gov\/Laws\/SessionLaws\/Acts\/2022\/Chapter173#:~:text=Sports%20wagering%E2%80%9D%2C%20the,and%20straight%20bets.\">Massachusetts<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nrgc.nebraska.gov\/gaming\/sports-betting#:~:text=Important%20wagering%20restrictions\">Nebraska<\/a>, Pennsylvania,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/liquorandlottery.vermont.gov\/sites\/liqlot\/files\/documents\/Vermont%20Mobile%20Sports%20Wagering%20Catalog20231215.pdf\">Vermont<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/law.lis.virginia.gov\/vacode\/title58.1\/chapter40\/section58.1-4039\/\">Virginia<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check with your state\u2019s gaming commission for current rules and regulations around betting on college sports. If your state doesn\u2019t ban prop bets on college sports, pay close attention to potential legislative or regulatory action around those types of bets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere will be more restrictions coming, there will be guardrails put in, there will be a kind of a narrowing of the space that gambling entities can be in \u2014 and that\u2019s going to come from a legislative body,\u201d Kraft said.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Examine how other countries address integrity issues.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">College sports has not reached a tipping point at which sports betting is seriously threatening the integrity of competition, Balsam and Kraft explained. Most student-athletes are not gambling or involved in bribery schemes, and they play honestly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, Balsam added, it\u2019s worth looking at regulations and legislation in other countries to understand how U.S. authorities might address integrity-of-the-game concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, Balsam pointed to legislative efforts in <a href=\"https:\/\/iclg.com\/practice-areas\/gambling-laws-and-regulations\/spain\/\">Spain<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk\/documents\/CBP-7428\/CBP-7428.pdf\">England<\/a> to limit advertising from sportsbooks. <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12164126\/\">Research<\/a> published in the Harm Reduction Journal in 2025 suggests that the Spanish decree reduced the total money gambled, but not the average number of active accounts with online sportsbooks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/senate-bill\/4555\/cosponsors\">bipartisan<\/a> efforts at the federal level to limit sportsbook advertising in the U.S. Some states, such as New York and New Jersey, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports-entertainment.brooklaw.edu\/sports\/from-marlboros-to-moneylines-why-sports-gambling-ads-may-need-a-regulatory-check\/\">have considered<\/a> restricting sportsbook ads. The NCAA has hired private firms to <a href=\"https:\/\/ic360.io\/page\/ncaa-bolsters-competition-integrity-with-ic360%E2%80%99s-prohibet-solution-for-championship-officials\">monitor integrity concerns<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sports reporters covering gambling on college sports should also know about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coe.int\/en\/web\/sport\/macolin\">Macolin Convention<\/a>, Balsam said. It\u2019s an international treaty aimed at combating manipulation of sporting contests. Dozens of European nations have signed it, along with Australia and Morrocco. The U.S. has not.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportintegrity.gov.au\/\">Australia also has a regulatory agency<\/a> whose mandate is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportintegrity.gov.au\/\">protect sports integrity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the U.S., finding the regulatory balance between sportsbooks and <a href=\"https:\/\/journalistsresource.org\/politics-and-government\/sports-betting-tax-revenues\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/journalistsresource.org\/politics-and-government\/sports-betting-tax-revenues\/\">states that want to maximize revenue<\/a> \u2014 while maintaining integrity and the interest of fans, sponsors and the news media \u2014 is going to be \u201can ongoing calibration,\u201d Balsam said.<\/p>\n<p>The post <a href=\"https:\/\/journalistsresource.org\/education\/sports-betting-on-campus\/\">Sports betting on campus: Story ideas from our webinar<\/a> appeared first on <a href=\"https:\/\/journalistsresource.org\">The Journalist&#039;s Resource<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\tA project of Harvard Kennedy School&#8217;s Shorenstein Center, The Journalist\u2019s Resource curates, summarizes and contextualizes high-quality research on newsy public policy topics.
