Let\u2019s chat about one hyphenated word that is bandied about very irresponsibly when it comes to Solar Installations.<\/p>\n

I have seen many adverts, videos and postings about going OFF-GRID.<\/p>\n

So many in fact that the word \u201cOFF-GRID\u201d is used to denote any solar installation.<\/p>\n

The ONLY time that one can refer to \u201cOFF-GRID\u201d is when you sever your umbilical cord to your electricity supplier \u2013 Eskom or Local Municipality.<\/p>\n

Put another way; \u201cWhen you no longer have an electricity cable coming from the street into your home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Or, another way; \u201cWhen you no longer have a Municipal or Eskom Meter in your home\u201d<\/p>\n

How about this way; \u201cWhen you no longer receive a bill for electricity from Eskom or your Local Municipality\u201d<\/p>\n

In other words that 5kW Inverter, 5kWh battery and 12 solar panels is NOT \u201cOFF-GRID\u201d.<\/p>\n

If you have an electricity meter and self consume at home to REDUCE your electricity consumption then you are STILL connected to the GRID.<\/p>\n

Making Your Own Electricity at home comes in three \u2018flavours\u2019:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Grid Tie Only (no battery, no backup, Electricity meter in place) \u2013 the cheapest and most efficient way to quickly reduce your bills and connected to the GRID.<\/li>\n
  2. Hybrid (includes battery, Electricity meter in place) \u2013 Over panel on the system, mid range cost and connected to the GRID.<\/li>\n
  3. OFF-GRID (Same as Hybrid but with more batteries and panels plus another form of power generation on standby \u2013 generator, wind turbine etc) \u2013 most expensive option AND completely OFF-GRID.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
