With World Mosquito Day (20 August) highlighting the dangers of mosquito-borne diseases and the importance of prevention, it also serves as a reminder that some insect bites and stings can lead to serious allergic reactions, infections, and even life-threatening illnesses if left untreated.

“Insect bites are often dismissed as harmless, but in some cases they are not. Medical attention may be needed in instances of allergic reactions, infections, or illnesses,” says Murray Hewlett, CEO of Affinity Health.

“Knowing what to look for can help you prevent complications and ensure people receive treatment when they need it most.”

Fortunately, most insect bites and stings cause only mild symptoms such as itching, redness, swelling, or temporary discomfort, and improve within a few days with basic care. However, certain symptoms may signal that a bite has become more serious and should never be ignored.

When a Bite Becomes a Medical Emergency

One of the most serious complications of an insect sting is anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction that can occur after a bee, wasp, hornet, or ant sting. Symptoms can develop within minutes and may rapidly become life-threatening.

Warning signs include:

Swelling of the lips, tongue, throat, or face.

Difficulty breathing or wheezing.

Dizziness or fainting.

A rapid heartbeat.

Nausea or vomiting.

A widespread rash or hives.

The Danger of Infected Bites

Even a seemingly harmless insect bite can become infected, especially if it is repeatedly scratched.

Signs of infection include:

Increasing redness around the bite area.

Swelling that continues to worsen.

Warmth around the affected area.

Pus or fluid drainage.

Significant pain or tenderness.

Fever or chills.

Red streaks spreading from the bite.

Insect Bites Can Sometimes Spread Disease

Some insect bites can transmit diseases carried by mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, and other biting pests. The symptoms of these illnesses may not appear immediately and can develop days or even weeks after a bite. Warning signs can include fever, headaches, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, nausea, skin rashes, and flu-like symptoms. Mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria are particularly important to recognise early, especially when travelling to or spending time in areas where malaria occurs. Symptoms may include fever, chills, sweating, headaches, vomiting, muscle pain, and extreme tiredness. Because malaria can become severe and potentially life-threatening if left untreated, prompt medical attention is essential.

What About Spider Bites?

Most spider bites cause only mild redness, swelling, and discomfort that improve on their own. However, although serious spider bites are uncommon, some can trigger more severe reactions. Medical attention should be sought if a bite causes severe or worsening pain, blistering skin, muscle cramps, fever, nausea, difficulty breathing, or worsening skin damage around the affected area, as these symptoms may indicate a serious reaction that requires professional assessment and treatment.

Children and Vulnerable Individuals Need Extra Care

Young children are often more vulnerable to complications from insect bites. They may scratch bites until the skin breaks, increasing the risk of infection. Children may also struggle to communicate symptoms such as dizziness, breathing difficulties, or feeling unwell.

Parents should seek medical attention if a child develops:

Facial swelling.

Difficulty breathing.

A fever after a bite.

Excessive sleepiness.

Signs of infection.

Older adults and people living with chronic health conditions such as diabetes, cancer, HIV, or immune-related disorders should also be cautious. In these individuals, bites may take longer to heal and complications can develop more quickly.

How to Reduce Your Risk

Preventing insect bites remains the best form of protection.

Simple steps include:

Using insect repellent as directed.

Wearing long sleeves and trousers outdoors.

Avoiding areas with large numbers of insects.

Removing standing water around the home.

Keeping windows and doors screened where possible.

Shaking out shoes and clothing before wearing them.

Avoiding disturbing insect nests or hives.

Travellers visiting areas where insect-borne diseases are common should speak to a healthcare professional about appropriate precautions before departure.

Listen to What Your Body Is Telling You

Most insect bites are harmless and resolve without treatment. However, worsening symptoms, spreading redness, fever, breathing difficulties, severe swelling, or signs of infection should never be ignored.

Knowing the difference between a normal reaction and a potentially dangerous one can help prevent complications and ensure treatment is received before a minor bite becomes a major health concern.

Affinity Health members have access to unlimited 24/7 telehealth consultations, as well as unlimited managed in-person consultations through an extensive network of healthcare professionals, making it easier to seek medical advice when an insect bite or sting becomes a health concern.

About Affinity Health

Affinity Health is South Africa’s leading health cover provider, offering you a range of options at affordable rates, including access to the widest national provider network.
