Many of us think of winter as the gardening \u2018off-season\u2019 as we patiently wait for spring. But while your garden may appear still above ground, there\u2019s still a remarkable amount happening beneath the surface and on every leaf. It just has its own quieter way of communicating: leaving small clues for those paying attention.<\/p>\n

According to Fathima Mathen, Marketing Manager at GARDENA South Africa, winter can be one of the most revealing seasons for gardeners if you know what to look for. \u201cIt\u2019s then that you are able to spot which areas are more sheltered, where frost settles first, and how different plants respond to the season. Those observations can help you make more informed gardening decisions throughout the year,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Put another way, your garden is quietly telling you everything you need to know; you just have to be listening. Here\u2019s what it might be saying this winter:<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not the same everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

Every garden is made up of its own tiny microclimates.<\/p>\n

Step outside on a winter\u2019s morning, and you\u2019ll soon see why. One area may still be holding onto frost while another is already warming in the sunshine. A wall facing the winter sun can create a warmer pocket, while a low-lying area may collect colder air overnight. This happens because cold air naturally sinks and pools, creating frost pockets.\u00b9<\/p>\n

Understanding these differences helps explain why one plant thrives while another, only a few metres away, struggles. It can also help you choose the best spot for new plants or understand why certain areas of the garden always seem to perform differently.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat sparkle doesn\u2019t tell the whole story.\u201d<\/p>\n

A lawn glittering with dew on a crisp winter morning can look as if it has been watered, but appearances can be deceptive. After a clear, calm night, grass cools enough for moisture in the air to condense into dew. And while those tiny droplets make a beautiful show, they sit on top of the grass rather than soaking into the soil, so they contribute very little to what roots actually need.\u00b2<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why if you\u2019re unsure whether to water or not, let the soil be your guide, not the sparkle on the surface.<\/p>\n

Dew can also keep leaves damp for longer into the morning, and that lingering moisture creates favourable conditions for fungal disease. If you notice dense, crowded growth holding onto moisture, a light prune where appropriate can help improve airflow and allow leaves to dry more quickly.\u00b2<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes it\u2019s the breeze, not the freeze.\u201d<\/p>\n

The temperature only tells part of the winter story. The wind adds another.<\/p>\n

Dry winter winds increase moisture loss from leaves, particularly on evergreen plants that keep their foliage throughout the colder months. If you spot browning on just one side of a shrub or hedge after winter, it\u2019s often the side facing the prevailing wind: a clue that exposure, rather than disease, could be the cause.\u00b3<\/p>\n

That\u2019s also why the same plant may thrive next to a wall or fence yet struggle only a few metres away in a more exposed spot. Winter is the perfect time to spot these patterns, helping you decide where vulnerable plants may need extra shelter or where future planting positions could be better suited.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s easy to think of spring as the beginning of the gardening year. In reality, many successful spring gardens are built during winter,\u201d Mathen notes. \u201cWinter doesn\u2019t ask us to do more. It simply asks us to notice more.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe small clues your garden gives you now can help you make smarter gardening decisions, not just in winter, but throughout the seasons,\u201d she concludes.<\/p>\n
