From PoW to PoS: How Do Mainstream Consensus Mechanisms Solve the Trust Problem in Blockchain?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Different blockchains use different consensus designs, but they fundamentally address the same question: without a centralized administrator, who has the right to produce a block, and how can other nodes verify that the block is valid?<\/p>\n<p>Today, the major consensus mechanisms include PoW, PoS, and BFT-based PoS mechanisms.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Different Blockchains Consensus Mechanism\" width=\"640\" height=\"372\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ibb.co\/tpzMGYBn\/0-JQNx-SEvt-Xrhq-Ct-VB.png\" class=\"lazyload\"><\/p>\n<p>These approaches show that there is no single \u201cperfect answer\u201d for every blockchain.<\/p>\n<p>PoW emphasizes establishing security costs through physical resources; PoS emphasizes establishing security constraints through economic staking; BFT-based mechanisms place greater emphasis on enabling validators to reach deterministic consensus quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Different designs are essentially answering the same question:<\/p>\n<p>How can a network without a centralized authority reach a consistent state more efficiently while maintaining security?<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"II_Consensus_Mechanisms_Are_Evolving_From_%E2%80%9CSecurity_First%E2%80%9D_Toward_%E2%80%9CSecurity_Efficiency%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>II. Consensus Mechanisms Are Evolving From \u201cSecurity First\u201d Toward \u201cSecurity + Efficiency\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In the early days of blockchain, the primary question was whether a network could operate securely.<\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin established a clear security model through PoW: attacking the network requires enormous computational and energy costs.<\/p>\n<p>But as blockchain began to support larger-scale applications, simply increasing the cost of security could not solve every problem.<\/p>\n<p>Large amounts of computation lead to higher operating costs, while transaction confirmation speed, throughput, and finality also become important considerations for large-scale applications.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the industry gradually moved toward PoS and BFT-based consensus mechanisms.<\/p>\n<p>Behind this evolution is an important idea:<\/p>\n<p>Instead of relying primarily on massive amounts of computation for network security, blockchain can use validators, staked assets, and multi-node voting to establish economic and consensus security.<\/p>\n<p>This has led to several important directions in consensus design:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lower resource consumption: reducing reliance on large-scale computational power;<\/li>\n<li>Faster finality: confirming transactions more quickly and reducing waiting costs;<\/li>\n<li>Higher efficiency: using validator voting to reach consensus more rapidly;<\/li>\n<li>Greater scalability: enabling the consensus layer to work together with the execution layer, data availability layer, and other modules.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As blockchain moves further into the Rollup and modular era, consensus mechanisms are also changing.<\/p>\n<p>The consensus layer no longer needs to handle all computation. Instead, it can focus more on transaction ordering, block production, and final confirmation of the network state.<\/p>\n<p>This is the context behind ME Network\u2019s adoption of a PPoS + ME-Tendermint consensus architecture.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"III_How_Does_ME_Network_Rethink_Consensus_PPoS_ME-Tendermint\"><\/span>III. How Does ME Network Rethink Consensus: PPoS + ME-Tendermint<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>ME Network does not simply adopt traditional PoS. Instead, it builds on the economic security model of PoS by introducing validator identity verification and governance-based admission mechanisms, forming Permitted Proof of Stake (PPoS).<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, ME Network uses ME-Tendermint, a BFT consensus mechanism based on Tendermint \/ CometBFT, at the underlying layer to handle transaction ordering, block production, and final confirmation.<\/p>\n<p>Simply put:<\/p>\n<p>PPoS addresses \u201cwho can participate in consensus\u201d and \u201chow to establish economic and identity-based constraints,\u201d while ME-Tendermint addresses \u201chow participants can quickly reach agreement on blocks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Together, these two components form the underlying consensus system of ME Network.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. PPoS: Moving From \u201cStaking\u201d Toward \u201cIdentity + Staking + Governance\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The core of traditional PoS is staking.<\/p>\n<p>Validators need to stake the required assets and use economic costs to constrain their behavior. Validators that participate normally can receive incentives, while double signing, malicious behavior, or other violations of consensus rules may result in economic penalties such as Slashing.<\/p>\n<p>ME Network further introduces a validator admission mechanism on this foundation.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to meeting staking requirements, validators must complete identity verification and pass the relevant governance review before joining the validator set.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, PPoS can be understood as: economic constraints + trusted identity + governance-based admission.<\/p>\n<p>This design means that validators are no longer simply anonymous addresses on the chain. Instead, they become network participants with verifiable identities and traceable responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>The core advantages of PPoS include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Trusted identity: Validators have verifiable identities, reducing risks associated with anonymous malicious nodes;<\/li>\n<li>Economic security: MEC staking and Slashing mechanisms increase the cost of malicious behavior;<\/li>\n<li>Governable participation: Validator admission and exit are managed through network governance;<\/li>\n<li>Compliance-friendly: Better suited to application scenarios such as digital identity and RWA that require trusted participants;<\/li>\n<li>Lower energy consumption: Does not rely on the large-scale computational competition required by PoW.<\/li>\n<li>Therefore, the goal of PPoS is not simply to \u201climit validators,\u201d but to explore a new balance between decentralization, security, and trusted participation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. ME-Tendermint: Enabling Faster Consensus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>PPoS defines how validators participate, while actual block consensus is completed by ME-Tendermint.<\/p>\n<p>Learn about Medium\u2019s values<br \/>ME-Tendermint is built on the Tendermint \/ CometBFT BFT consensus protocol. Its core approach is to use multiple rounds of validator voting to confirm blocks without relying on large-scale computational competition.<\/p>\n<p>Once more than 2\/3 of validator voting power agrees on the same block, that block can reach final confirmation.<\/p>\n<p>This provides several important characteristics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fast finality: Once consensus is reached, a block can be confirmed without waiting for a large number of subsequent blocks;<\/li>\n<li>High security: Under the BFT security assumptions, honest validators can maintain a consistent network state;<\/li>\n<li>High efficiency: Consensus is reached through validator voting, avoiding the large-scale computational competition of PoW;<\/li>\n<li>Modular support: The consensus layer is decoupled from the execution layer, settlement layer, and other functions, providing underlying security for modules such as RollApp.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This also reflects an important design principle of modular blockchain: let the consensus layer focus on \u201ctrust,\u201d while other modules focus on \u201cscaling.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"IV_How_Does_the_ME_Network_Consensus_Process_Work\"><\/span>IV. How Does the ME Network Consensus Process Work?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Understanding a consensus mechanism requires more than knowing which algorithm it uses. It is also important to understand how a block moves from transactions to a final confirmed state.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The ME-Tendermint consensus process consists primarily of four stages:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"ME Network Consensus Mechanism\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ibb.co\/3YMsdqFx\/0-X2zt-Eyzv6v-Knh-yd.png\" class=\"lazyload\"><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>1. Proposal<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>At the current block height and round, the designated Proposal Validator packages transactions and generates a candidate block.<\/p>\n<p>The proposer then broadcasts the candidate block to other validators.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>2. Pre-vote<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>After receiving the candidate block, other validators verify it, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Whether the block format is correct;<\/li>\n<li>Whether the transactions are valid;<\/li>\n<li>Whether the block state complies with network rules;<\/li>\n<li>Whether the previous block state is correct.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the block is valid, validators send a Pre-vote for the block.<\/p>\n<p>If the block is invalid or a timeout occurs, validators may vote Nil.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>3. Pre-commit<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>When a candidate block receives more than 2\/3 of validator voting power in Pre-votes, validators enter the Pre-commit stage.<\/p>\n<p>Validators confirm the block again and broadcast Pre-commit messages.<\/p>\n<p>If sufficient consensus cannot be reached, the network moves to the next consensus round.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>4. Commit<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>When a block receives more than 2\/3 of validator voting power in Pre-commits, the network enters the Commit stage.<\/p>\n<p>Once the block is committed: the block state is officially written on-chain, final confirmation is achieved, and the network moves to the next block height.<\/p>\n<p>Once a block completes Commit, it has finality and does not require multiple subsequent blocks for further confirmation.<\/p>\n<p>This mechanism enables ME Network to complete block confirmation through multiple validators without relying on massive computational power.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion_The_Next_Step_for_Consensus_Is_Finding_a_New_Balance\"><\/span>Conclusion | The Next Step for Consensus Is Finding a New Balance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>From PoW to PoS and then to BFT-based consensus mechanisms, the evolution of blockchain consensus has always revolved around the same question:<\/p>\n<p>How can blockchain become larger, faster, and more complex while remaining secure and trustworthy?<\/p>\n<p>PoW establishes security through computational costs, PoS establishes security constraints through economic staking, while BFT-based consensus mechanisms further improve block confirmation efficiency and finality.<\/p>\n<p>ME Network\u2019s exploration builds on these approaches by combining identity, staking, governance, and BFT consensus.<\/p>\n<p>PPoS establishes a trusted validator participation mechanism, ME-Tendermint enables rapid network consensus, while the modular architecture allows the consensus layer to work together with Rollup, data availability, and other network modules.<\/p>\n<p>This is not simply a choice of consensus algorithm. It reflects ME Network\u2019s broader understanding of next-generation Web3 infrastructure:<\/p>\n<p><strong>The future of blockchain is not simply about pursuing higher TPS.
