A new CBD forming around Johannesburg’s planned aerotropolis – adjoining Africa’s busiest airport, OR Tambo International – has drawn the presence of leading global tyre manufacturer Michelin. From December Michelin South Africa’s headquarters will be at Krisp Properties’ 20,000m² (gross leasable area) Clearwater Office Park along the increasingly sought-after Atlas Road, adjacent to the land earmarked for the aerotropolis. The modern, custom-built AAA-grade headquarters, part of Clearwater’s second phase of development, was completed by Krisp Properties in a record seven months – a feat Krisp Property executive director Jordan Mann attributed to good workmanship and solid commitment from all the stakeholders involved. “Everyone performed very well,” said Mann. “We pulled the right professionals and contractors together. Given the tight timeline, it ended up being a very professional team working together.” The state-of-the-art offices span 2,500m² – more than enough space for the 120 Michelin employees set to occupy the offices – and boast three impressive double-volume lobbies, rosewood doors and other top-quality finishes. DEMAND FOR LAND SURGES The demand for land in the area was immense, said Mann, who added that current tenants of Clearwater Office Park included Discovery Health, Old Mutual, ABSA Bank and Imperial Air Cargo. So successful was the development that building could not keep up with demand, Mann said. With Michelin’s 2,500m² custom-built offices now open, and with the rest of Phase 2 of the office park due for completion by mid-2014, Mann said the company was already planning a third phase: 28,000m² of additional office space set for development in the second half of next year. “Our unique location enables us to position ourselves as a conduit for – and compliment to – business within the aerotropolis development,” said Mann. MICHELIN’S NEW HQ Michelin’s move from its former offices in Bedfordview came after it conducted a survey . . .
Fire! The role of heat and light in African Art Standard Bank Gallery 29 January – 31 December 2013 This exhibition on the role of heat and light in African Art is on display at Standard Bank Gallery until the end of the year. The ethereal nature of fire has enthralled the human race for millennia. It can be seen, heard, felt and smelt, but it cannot be grasped. This exhibition of historical and contemporary African art drawn from the Standard Bank African Art Collection, housed at the University of the Witwatersrand, explores the role fire has played in African cultural expression. The exhibition alludes to the distinctive attributes of fire: light, heat and smoke, as well as associated natural features such as the sun and lightning. It explores the role that fire – in all its manifestations - has played in aspects of African life, including the ecology, economy, social organisation, politics and religion. The control of fire has arguably been the single most important “shaper” of human culture, setting us apart from other species. More fundamental than the wheel, and more versatile, the use of fire has unleashed alchemic processes which have played a significant role in the development – for better or worse – of humankind. Heat enabled human beings to cook their food and to make natural substances materials more durable: firing clay pots; hardening and decorating wooden items; forging metal tools, ornaments and weapons; and transforming sand into glass. The heat and light generated by fire enabled our earliest ancestors to extend their waking time deep into the night. This is believed to have played a role in facilitating social gatherings and the development of social and religious practices. The beautifully crafted clay pots on exhibition demonstrate the transformative power of fire and various stages of the manufacturing process. Once pots have been patiently shaped they are fired in a shallow pit to harden the clay. The pot is then re-fired in a . . .

Crocodile Creek Polo Club was thrilled to host this year’s very successful 94.7 Highveld Stereo and MTN Joburg Day! With a stellar line up of bands from Goldfish, Prime Circle, The Parlotones and Gangs of Ballet to Lloyd Cele, Elvis Blue, Daniel Baron and Connell Cruise the 10 hour music session had almost 30 000 people rocking all day! With ample room for everyone, the 300m x 200m polo field provided a dust-free, grassy surface to relax on and enjoy a beautiful day in the country. Fortunately for such an event, polo is played on the biggest field of any organized sport, so it can easily accommodate a large crowd. Being a fiercely contested game, it has captured many imaginations and converts, with history informing us that it was started by Genghis Khan in the Northern parts of India. A bit of riding ability and some ball skill are all it takes to become completely hooked on what is a demanding and challenging game. Golf may require a bit more patience but Sylvester Stallone was once heard to say that “playing polo is like trying to play golf in an earthquake”. Not everyone comes to polo with riding skills but Crocodile Creek is one of a few clubs in the Gauteng area that can assist with coaching and getting familiar with the game. Lessons in riding for polo are followed up with learning the different shots and rules of the game. The Club is easily able to assist with this and most polo players are very approachable and willing to help and guide new initiates. Crocodile Creek hosts a number of tournaments during the year and the club is just warming up for the summer season. Tournaments run from Friday to Sunday and all spectators are welcome to attend. Just pack a picnic and your favourite drinks or contact us for other catering arrangements or if you require corporate hospitality. “Having now had the opportunity to host so many Joburg people at the club, we look forward to next year and to having everyone back soon. Our special thanks to . . .

Thirteen international experts converge on Johannesburg on the 20th and 21st July. What are the benefits of seeing these international speakers? Simple answer is the benefits are tremendous! Think of it this way, each speaker has a slot of around 90 minutes. That’s 1170 minutes of mind and money success creating strategies being taught by the best mind and money coaches in the world. What are the chances that you won’t learn something really thought provoking and life changing from these speakers and authors during those 1170 minutes? All of these speakers had to face some massive challenges during their journey to success and they epitomise what Napoleon Hill writes about in his book “Think and Grow Rich”. Hill writes that the mind that is not filled with wealth consciousness is filled with poverty consciousness – that there is no middle ground. Hill also writes that every adversity brings with it the equivalent seed of opportunity.
