Print and Digital Media South Africa is an umbrella body incorporating print and digital media. The PDMSA is a natural progression from the long-established Print Media South Africa and illustrates our commitment as an interactive organisation to keeping pace with the fast-changing media world of the 21st Century. An evolving and vibrant association, our express purpose is to represent and promote all aspects concerning the industry and our members.

Print and Digital Media South Africa is a non-profit, voluntary association that was originally formed to bring together under one roof publishers of diverse print genres. In a fast-changing media landscape, the print media recognised the advantages of extending its footprint online. To reflect this, we extended our membership to include digital media publications and changed our name accordingly. Currently the PDMSA membership includes more than 700 newspaper and magazine titles that cater for four different language groups.

Print and Digital Media South Africa is committed to partnering with our members to ensure the long-term sustainability of the industry. We are dedicated to promoting a free and independent press through close interaction with members and by working together across print and digital media. We comply with internationally recognised good governance practices and effective stakeholder management.

The rich and colourful history of print media goes back to 1800 when slave traders Governor Sir George Yonge, Alexander Walker and John Robertson launched the South African media industry. Their English/Dutch Cape Town Gazette and African Advertiser/Kaapsche Stads Courant en Afrikaansche Berigter appeared on 16 August. With the dismissal 13 months later of Yonge, the government took over all printing.
