WILDERNESS, SOUTH AFRICA, September 2026, Consensuality has introduced Wilderness, Together, a five-night private couples retreat based in Hoekwil near Wilderness that brings accommodation, fully inclusive and several Garden Route tourism experiences together in one organised stay.
The retreat is designed for couples who want time away together without joining a group wellness programme, structured relationship retreat or conventional resort itinerary. Only one couple is hosted at a time, with private use of an adults-only cabin and no shared retreat spaces.
For the Garden Route tourism sector, the concept also shows how accommodation and independent tourism operators can be combined into a broader destination experience. Wilderness serves as the base, while activities take couples into other parts of the region, including George, Knysna and the coastline.
A Garden Route itinerary built around shared experiences
The five-night stay includes accommodation, all meals prepared by a private chef and a selection of experiences designed around both adventure and time together. These include a private game drive on a working buffalo farm near George, two microlight flights taking place simultaneously along the coastline, a sunset cruise on Knysna Lagoon, a gourmet beach picnic and an in-cabin couples massage.
A self-led cacao ritual is also provided, while paddleboards and kayaks are available for couples who want to spend additional time on the water.
Unlike a traditional packaged tour, the itinerary is intentionally not filled from morning to evening. Most days are centred around one principal experience, with the remaining time left open.
“There is a difference between taking a holiday together and creating enough space to actually reconnect,” said Carol Momberg, founder of Consensuality. “We wanted to remove the planning and logistics while still leaving couples with time that genuinely belongs to them.”
That approach is particularly relevant in a destination such as the Garden Route, where travellers often have a large number of accommodation, activity and dining options to choose from. Instead of asking guests to research and book each part of the trip separately, Wilderness, Together combines selected regional experiences into one coordinated itinerary.
Private, but not a therapy retreat
The retreat differs from traditional couples therapy or facilitated relationship programmes. There are no compulsory workshops, group discussions or scheduled coaching sessions.
Instead, couples can make use of self-guided resources inside the cabin if they choose. These include conversation prompts, love-letter stationery, body-painting materials, role-play prompts, an erotic treasure hunt and a private workbook covering communication, boundaries, consent and aftercare.
The cabin itself includes a wood-fired outdoor hot tub, spa bath, mirrored four-poster bed and a private adults-only playroom. These elements are available entirely at the couple’s own pace, without a facilitator or structured programme.
The one-couple-at-a-time model also makes privacy part of the product rather than an accommodation upgrade. There are no additional retreat participants sharing the itinerary, cabin facilities or organised experiences.
A collaborative model for local tourism
For local tourism operators, the retreat provides an example of how smaller businesses can work together to create a higher-value multi-day experience. Accommodation, private dining, wildlife tourism, aviation, boating, wellness and other regional services can collectively form a more complete visitor proposition than any individual component on its own.
The standard retreat runs for five nights and can be extended to seven. Couples can also add a private photography experience with a keepsake coffee-table book or incorporate a Cape Winelands stay into a longer South African itinerary.
Couples interested in the retreat can submit their preferred travel period and stay length before availability and itinerary details are confirmed. No payment is taken during the initial enquiry, with a deposit used to reserve dates once arrangements have been agreed.
Staying connected beyond the retreat
Those who are not ready to enquire about a retreat can also join The Inner Circle, Consensuality’s private newsletter featuring relationship and intimacy tips, personal stories, free resources, selected offers, retreat news, invitations and occasional member-only extras.
Further information about the retreat and Consensuality’s wider offering is available through the Consensuality website.
