Cape Town – Blue Route Mall is celebrating the arrival of spring with a month of art, colour and creativity as its Spring in Colour Art Festival runs until 27 September 2026.
Presented in partnership with Kunye Art Foundation, the festival showcases the work of more than 50 emerging artists, hobbyists and professionals, bringing art out of the traditional gallery environment and into an accessible everyday space where shoppers can view and purchase original works, meet artists and experience the creative process first-hand.
“Spring in Colour is about making art accessible while celebrating the incredible creative talent within our community,” says Bronwyn Rabie, Regional Marketing Manager at Redefine Properties. “We want shoppers to experience the centre differently – whether they discover a new artist, watch a work being created or try something creative themselves.”
A month of creativity
Throughout September, live artist demonstrations take place, giving shoppers an opportunity to watch participating artists at work and engage with them about their techniques and creative journeys. Every Friday, shoppers can also take part in free adult creative workshops, with two sessions at 11:00–12:30 and 14:00–15:30. Places are limited to six people per session and are available on a first-come-first-served basis.
The programme includes:
- 4 September – Clay & Create: Create a colourful handcrafted piece using polymer clay.
- 11 September – Bottle & Bloom: Transform a bottle using colourful decoupage techniques.
- 18 September – Colour on Cloth: Turn a plain pillowcase into a one-of-a-kind creation.
- 25 September – Art on a Plate: Transform a simple side plate into your own decorative artwork.
Children can get creative too, with free colouring sponsored by Teddy by Dala available as part of the festival.
Introducing The Creative Social
Spring in Colour will also introduce The Creative Social, a facilitated creative experience combining art, food and conversation in a relaxed setting. Hosted by Kunye Art Foundation at Mugg & Bean on 17 September, the first Creative Social will feature Acrylic Painting for Beginners, with sessions from 10:00–12:30 and 14:00–16:30. No previous painting experience is required. Places are limited and advance booking will be required. Booking information will be shared on the Blue Route Mall Facebook page. Art with purpose Spring in Colour’s partnership with Kunye Art Foundation also gives the festival a purpose beyond the celebration of art.
The non-profit organisation works to uplift and empower artists from South Africa’s diverse cultural landscape. Its community includes artists with disabilities, survivors of gender-based violence, disadvantaged individuals, single mothers, emerging talent and professional artists who provide mentorship.
Kunye provides artists with art supplies, mentorship and opportunities to exhibit and sell their work to local and international buyers, helping them develop their skills and work towards greater financial independence. Its artist community also provides a space for support, encouragement and collaboration.
“We believe in the power of art to transform lives,” says Ingrid Wallach, Managing Director and Founder of Kunye Art Foundation. “By providing a platform for diverse voices and mentoring young talent, we are not only nurturing artistic potential but also creating pathways to economic empowerment and personal healing.”
For Blue Route Mall, the partnership creates an opportunity to connect local artists with new audiences while giving shoppers an accessible way to experience and support local creativity. Spring in Colour Art Festival is on at Blue Route Mall until 27 September 2026.
