The City of Cape Town has officially launched its Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) programme this month (April 2026). This massive R1.1 billion project aims to replace approximately 83,000 mechanical meters in its first phase (through 2029).
The City has appointed PPD Engineering and Hardware Suppliers as the primary contractor for the rollout.
You may see their technicians in areas like Welgemoed, Bellville, Door de Kraal, Loevenstein, Kenridge, and De Bron during this initial phase. Authorized installers should be easily identifiable by:
- Company-branded uniforms and PPE.
- Official City of Cape Town identification cards.
- Marked vehicles.
The City is moving away from mechanical “spinning dial” meters to Ultrasonic Smart Meters….
