Gqeberha – Finding fish moths in a kitchen cupboard can lead to a wider inspection than the homeowner expects. At True Clean, Diederik Visser starts with where the insects are being seen and checks for damp areas as well as activity elsewhere in the house.
Silverfish, commonly called fish moths, feature in enquiries about kitchen and bedroom cupboards. In Visser’s experience, the cupboard where someone first notices them may be only one of the affected areas. He asks about other sightings rather than assuming that a single shelf tells the whole story.
That changes what the resident can usefully explain before a visit. Which cupboards have activity? Have the insects appeared in other rooms? Is there a damp area nearby? The answers help direct the inspection and establish how far the problem extends.
On some properties, Visser finds activity around damp floors or beneath tiles. Those observations are worth raising with the owner, but they do not establish why the building is damp. A silverfish sighting alone is not a diagnosis of rising damp, a foundation defect or a plumbing failure.
Finding the source of moisture is a separate part of looking after the property. Where a plumbing or building problem needs investigation, that can require the appropriate person to assess it alongside the pest work. Pest treatment does not repair a leaking pipe or resolve a damp building.
True Clean’s treatment plan follows the areas found to be affected. Cupboards, skirtings and other reported locations need assessing, with the products determining which surfaces can be treated. A complaint about a bedroom cupboard can still require attention elsewhere in the house.
Preparation also depends on what is found. A badly affected clothing cupboard may need clearing so that the inside can be reached. That does not mean residents should automatically empty every cupboard before discussing the work. The company explains which areas need preparing, including the arrangements for food and clothing.
Its usual silverfish service involves an initial treatment and another visit about a week later, with the plan confirmed for the property. Residents are asked to report where activity continues so those locations can be checked at the return visit. Treatment and access arrangements are discussed for the areas concerned.
The inspection therefore has two useful outcomes: a clearer picture of the pest activity and a record of any moisture concerns noticed along the way. For the homeowner, both matter when deciding what needs attention next.
