Johannesburg: The Mzansi Rugby League (MRL) says the creation of additional professional rugby clubs has the potential to generate economic opportunity far beyond the players who ultimately take the field.
According to the league, one of the reasons professional rugby opportunity remains important is because every sustainable professional club creates opportunities throughout an entire ecosystem of people, businesses and communities.
The MRL recently outlined its belief that South African rugby requires more professional opportunity. The league says that opportunity extends beyond players and coaches to include a wide range of industries connected to professional sport.
“When people hear the words ‘professional rugby club’, they often think only about players,” said Calvin Smith, Chief Commercial Officer of the MRL.
“But every professional club requires coaches, medical staff, analysts, content creators, operations personnel, venue staff, security providers, hospitality partners, transport providers and local businesses.”
“A professional rugby club is not simply a rugby team. It is an economic ecosystem.”
The MRL Premier Division is scheduled to launch in March 2027 with ten founding clubs located across Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, North West and the Western Cape.
According to the league, those clubs are expected to create recurring economic activity through:
- matchday operations
- accommodation bookings
- food and beverage vendors
- event staffing
- content production
- transportation
- merchandise sales
- sponsorship activation
- and local business partnerships.
The league says its city-based club model was intentionally designed to encourage stronger connections between clubs and their surrounding communities.
Unlike short competition windows, the MRL’s planned 18-round season structure is designed to create recurring weekly activity throughout the rugby calendar.
The league believes that regular professional fixtures provide more opportunities for businesses to engage with supporters, sponsors and visiting teams over an extended period.
“Strong clubs create more than sporting results,” Smith continued.
“They create reasons for people to travel. They create opportunities for local businesses. They create jobs. They create community pride. They create stories that people follow every week.”
The MRL also expects opportunities to emerge across sectors including:
- hospitality
- tourism
- digital media
- sports technology
- logistics
- healthcare
- performance services
- and event management.
According to the league, each professional club is expected to operate with dedicated staffing structures covering:
- coaching
- player welfare
- medical support
- administration
- media
- operations
- and commercial activity.
The league believes this broader ecosystem is an important part of growing the overall rugby economy in South Africa.
MRL Head of Recruitment Matthew Kriel says increased professional club activity ultimately creates more opportunity for rugby people throughout the system.
“Every additional professional club creates more opportunity,” said Kriel.
“More opportunities for players. More opportunities for coaches. More opportunities for medical professionals. More opportunities for people who want to build careers in sport.”
“That is one of the reasons the MRL exists.”
The league says its long-term vision includes the continued expansion of professional rugby opportunity through sustainable club structures, commercial growth and deeper community engagement.
According to the MRL, creating more professional rugby opportunity ultimately means creating more economic opportunity around rugby itself.
The MRL Premier Division is scheduled to launch in 2027 with ten founding clubs competing in a national professional rugby competition.
