CAPE TOWN, South Africa — Top Chinese Car Brands has published a report examining BYD’s reliability, drawing on independent global quality data and early ownership patterns among South African buyers.

Scale is not the same as quality, and buyers weighing a BYD purchase against more established brands need to know whether the manufacturing consistency behind the sales figures is actually there, or whether early South African ownership carries risks the marketing doesn’t mention.

The report explores independent global quality rankings, the engineering behind BYD’s Blade Battery technology, patterns in early South African owner complaints, how warranty cover varies across the range, and how BYD’s reliability profile compares to Tesla’s.

One finding complicates the picture considerably, in J.D. Power’s 2025 China NEV quality study covering more than 5,700 owners, BYD’s main brand placed slightly below the industry average while Tesla ranked in the top three.
