The Craft of Ubuntu: An Exploration of Collaboration through Making

Iziko South African National Gallery Annexe
3 to7 December2013

The Craft of Ubuntu an exhibition of cross-cultural design and craft will be hosted by Iziko Museums of South Africa, at the Iziko South African National Gallery Annexe, from 3 to 7 December 2013. The exhibition reveals the processes and conversations that have emerged from the work of London-based designer Sarah Rhodes, Cape Town-based Andile Dyalvane from Imiso Ceramics and the women crafters of Kunye as they explore collaboration through making.

This exhibition will showcase the Iqhina tableware and Inkuku jewellery collections, which have developed through a process of co-creation. Guided by Rhodes’ PhD research, the exhibition re-frames the nature of collaboration between designers and craft producers illustrating how co-creational agency, through equitable creative exchange, can engender successful outcomes.

“Iziko Museums of South Africa is a dynamic institution, constantly seeking new ways in which to enhance its offering. Our museums strive to promote creative thinking, scholarship, learning, innovation and knowledge exchange. The Iziko South African National Gallery Annexe is an inclusive space where people can explore our collective heritage, historic and artistic landscape.” says Ms Rooksana Omar, Chief Executive Officer, Iziko.

As Sarah pointed out,” with only one month to go before World Design Capital Cape Town 2014(WDC 2014) officially launches, this exhibition is timely, fulfilling one of it’s aims to bring design collaborators together in different ways, creating new conversations, connections and ways to doing things that will last long after 2014”. The exhibition will move to the world-renowned Central Saint Martins College of Arts & Design in London next year, developing the WDC 2014 theme ‘Bridging the Divide’ in a multitude of ways, between north/south, design/craft and Africa/Europe.
