Lovers of wine and venison can look forward to a finger-licking good experience at the Kom Braai Wyn- en Wildsfees from 21 – 23 March at the Tyger Valley Shopping Mall.
According to organiser Dewald Visser, visitors to the festival will enjoy a super time with local wine producers, an outdoor braai area, a game deli and live food demonstrations, as well as a farmers’ market and live music performed by well-known local artists in the entertainment arena.
Visser is an independent TV producer and the brains behind popular TV series like Hooked on Golf, Kom Braai, Troukoors van ’n Bachelor, Rygoed, Instink and African BBQ Hunter. Being at his most comfortable behind the coals with barbecue tongs in his hand, the concept of a wine and game festival was a natural next step for this eager entrepreneur.
“Food and wine go hand in hand for me. We have some of the best wines right here in the Western Cape and access to an unbelievable variety of venison. Many home cooks are, however, intimidated by cooking venison and the Kom Braai Wyn- en Wildsfees offers the ideal opportunity to learn from the experts. The Kom Braai team and several other top chefs from participating wine estates will present daily demonstrations and explain step by step how to prepare venison. We’ll be sharing our favourite recipes and tips for a truly gastronomic feast,” Visser explains.
The food market will have several food stalls where gourmet venison dishes will be served. Gastronomes will be able to enjoy gourmet burgers, sandwiches, tapas and steaks of kudu, springbok, eland and several other antelope species. Several deli products like cheese, olives, freshly baked bread and other delicacies will be available at the farmers’ market. The wine garden is the ideal venue to get together with family and friends and to relax with a glass of wine and delicious game dishes.
The gates open at 11h00 on Friday, 21 March, which coincides with the annual TygerRun/Walk. Friday evening will host a massive sokkiedans with artists like Fredi Nest, Nic Stevens, Dillon Lerm, Desmond Wells and Burger le Roux creating great dance music.
On Saturday evening the entertainment area will be transformed into a traditional German beer fest complete with an oompah band and German delicacies, as well as a selection of beers from ten micro breweries. For the fairer sex, there’s the Face to Face Miss Kom Braai competition, which takes place the Saturday afternoon in the wine garden. Entries are available on the Kom Braai Facebook page.
The venue for the festival is on the Durban Road side of Tyger Valley at Entrance 9. Tickets are R100 per person and available at Computicket or at the gates. No alcohol will be sold or served to children under the age of 18. A special Henties Vrugtesap children’s area with supervision and activities is available.
