Jozi My Jozi Ready to Support Province, City in Lead up to G20 Summit 2025

You are here: Home / Public Issues / Jozi My Jozi Ready to Support Province, City in Lead up to G20 Summit 2025

(MyPR.co.za) October 30, 2024 By //  by Janet de Kretser Filed Under: Public Issues Edit This Article

Johannesburg, often hailed as the economic powerhouse of South Africa, has been officially designated as the host city for the G20 Summit in 2025. This prestigious status is not merely a point of pride for our city; but it represents a transformative opportunity to reshape our economic landscape and elevate our global standing.

As such, the non-profit organisation, Jozi My Jozi (JMJ), will be working closely with the teams tasked with delivering the Summit to ensure its success not only for Johannesburg, but for the country as a whole, and across the continent. The movement has already established a close working relationship with both the Gauteng Provincial Government and the City of Joburg, through a signed MOU.

A Historic Milestone for South Africa

The selection of Johannesburg as the host city for the G20 Summit marks a historic milestone for both the city and the nation. As the first African country to host this influential gathering of world leaders, South Africa has the unique opportunity to showcase its rich culture, vibrant economy, and diverse communities on the global stage. The G20 Summit will convene leaders from the world’s largest economies, providing an unparalleled platform for dialogue and collaboration on pressing global issues.

Economic Opportunities and Growth

The G20 Summit is expected to attract thousands of delegates, media personnel, and dignitaries to Johannesburg. This influx will create significant opportunities for local businesses, particularly in hospitality, tourism, and services. Hotels, restaurants, and transport services will see increased demand, leading to job creation and economic stimulation.

Moreover, the summit will act as a catalyst for foreign investment in Johannesburg. By highlighting the city’s potential as a hub for innovation and business development, we can attract international companies looking to invest in South Africa. These investments could yield long-term economic benefits that extend well beyond the summit itself.

Strengthening South Africa’s Global Position

Hosting the G20 Summit provides South Africa with an unprecedented opportunity to advocate for African interests on a global stage. This event allows the country to take a leadership role in addressing critical issues such as climate change, sustainable development, and global economic stability. By engaging with world leaders, we can promote policies that support developing nations and foster equitable growth.

Leveraging This Opportunity

The G20 Summit presents Johannesburg with an opportunity to position itself as a key player in global discussions. By actively participating in shaping the agenda and outcomes of the G20, we can ensure that African voices are heard and that our continent’s many challenges are addressed internationally. As the country prepares to host this monumental event, it is crucial for all stakeholders – government ministers and departments, regional and local government representatives, business leaders, SMEs and SMMEs, community members, grassroots organisations, and every citizen of South Africa – to unite and leverage this opportunity effectively.

Jozi My Jozi: A Catalyst for Change

Jozi My Jozi is poised to play a pivotal role in this transformation, inspired by South Africa’s Constitution. More than an initiative focused on urban renewal, the movement embodies a vision for a safer, cleaner, and more vibrant Johannesburg by connecting and uniting various stakeholders across government, business, organisations and citizens to collaboratively tackle pressing urban challenges within the inner city.

“As Johannesburg prepares to host the G20 Summit 2025, Jozi My Jozi will leverage this global platform to amplify its mission of transformation. By actively participating in shaping the agenda, the movement will highlight critical issues such as urban development, social inclusion, and sustainable practices that are vital for both Johannesburg and the broader African context,” comments Adam Craker, a director of JMJ and CEO of IQbusiness.

“Our focus on transforming neglected urban spaces into safe and welcoming environments aligns perfectly with the G20’s emphasis on sustainable development and economic growth. Projects such as the ‘Gateways Project’, which aims to secure, clean up and beautify the 12 key entry points into the city centre, send a powerful message about South Africa’s readiness to embrace change.

With thousands of international delegates expected to attend the G20 Summit in November next year, first impressions will matter immensely. Jozi My Jozi’s efforts to enhance public spaces will improve safety and security, while creating an inviting atmosphere for visitors. Initiatives such as cleaning campaigns, landscaping projects, and art installations will help shift perceptions of Johannesburg from a city burdened by challenges to one brimming with potential and creativity.

Building Sustainable Partnerships

Jozi My Jozi’s collaborative approach is essential in addressing urban challenges effectively. Through engaging with corporate sponsors and local communities, its aim is to create sustainable projects that resonate with both residents and international visitors. This spirit of collaboration will be vital during G20 discussions where partnerships between public and private sectors are crucial for driving innovation and economic growth.

A Brighter Future Ahead

“The G20 Summit in 2025 is more than a global event; it is a stepping stone towards a brighter future for Johannesburg. By embracing this opportunity with enthusiasm and strategic planning, we can elevate our city’s profile on the international stage while fostering economic growth and social development at home,” says Robbie Brozin, a director of JMJ and co-founder of Nando’s.

“Let us unite as proud residents of Johannesburg to ensure that this summit not only showcases our city but also paves the way for sustainable progress and prosperity for all South Africans into the future. Together, we can turn this historic moment into a legacy of success!”

As Johannesburg prepares for its moment on the global stage, Jozi My Jozi stands ready to play an integral role in shaping the city’s narrative. Together, we can harness this opportunity to showcase our strengths, advocate for our needs, and inspire a new era of collaboration that benefits all South Africans.

Bea Swanepoel, CEO of JMJ, says: “We have been developing our G20 plans over the last few months in consultation with our stakeholders and will be announcing them soon. Jozi My Jozi will work alongside local businesses to create initiatives that highlight Johannesburg’s strengths while developing a year-long programme that celebrates our rich cultural heritage through engaging events. As we welcome international guests, we will prioritise sustainable practices and initiatives that reflect our commitment to environmental stewardship.

“Jozi my Jozi offers a unique blend of economic strength, historical significance, and inspirational youth. Powered by the spirit of ubuntu the youth will deliver not only a turnaround but ongoing growth, to re-establish Jozi as a vital city in South Africa and across Africa as a whole.

“We call on all our citizens to join us as we embrace this moment collectively and work with us towards achieving a brighter future for Jozi, and all its people who live, work, study and play within this dynamic city!” concludes Swanepoel.
