- Durban’s Catches takes its tackle counter online with rods, reels and reel servicing for coastal and dam anglers
- The Springfield Park tackle shop lists surf, estuary and boat rods, reels, line, hooks and lures, plus reel servicing, line spooling and trace making.
DURBAN, South Africa – From the gutters off the Bluff to the ledges at Port Edward, KwaZulu-Natal anglers fish in water that is hard on gear. Catches, the Springfield Park tackle shop in Durban, has put its fishing tackle range (https://catches.co.za/tackle) online for coastal and freshwater anglers across South Africa, together with the workshop services that keep that gear fishing.
Rods, reels and the small stuff
Rods cover long-cast surf rods, estuary rods for lagoons and harbour edges, boat rods for ski-boats and charters, spinning rods and baitcasters. Reels run from rock-and-surf reels and multipliers for heavy traces to spinning and freshwater reels for dams and rivers. On the terminal tackle side there is braided and monofilament line, fluorocarbon leader, circle, J and treble hooks, grapnel and cone sinkers, swivels and floats.
Spoons and spinners are sold by weight, from light lures for estuary and dam work to heavier models that punch through coastal wind and reach deeper water for elf, garrick and kob. Landing nets come in compact sizes for kayaks and estuary banks and with long handles for rock ledges and steep dam walls.
Workshop services
Salt and sand get into everything, so the Catches workshop offers reel servicing and repairs, drag tuning, line spooling, rod guide replacement and rod tip repair. It ties traces to suit the target species and local conditions, gives rig and bait-prep advice for surf, estuary, harbour and freshwater fishing, and does pre-trip gear checks. Beginners can have a first outfit chosen and put together for them.
“Most reels that come in feeling rough just haven’t been rinsed,” said Jason Petersen, Catches’ rod and reel technician. “Fresh water after every session, back the drag off before you put it away, and bring it in once a season. Too much grease is as bad as too little. It makes a reel feel stiff on a cold morning.”
Catches helps anglers from Durban, Umhlanga and Ballito to Pietermaritzburg, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Gqeberha. The range and service details are on the Catches website (https://catches.co.za/).
