CAPE TOWN, South Africa – A new battery fixes a flat battery for about a week, if the real fault is an alternator that has stopped charging properly or a module that never goes to sleep. V-Auto, an auto electrical and diagnostics workshop in Montague Gardens, Cape Town, has set out its vehicle diagnostic services for owners and fleet operators who would rather pay for a test than for parts that were not the problem.
The list covers 30 tests and fitments. Code reading starts with an OBD fault scan and a live data check on sensor values. Battery health, charging system and starter current tests come next, then a parasitic drain test that measures what the vehicle draws once it has powered down. Wiring continuity, earth point, voltage drop, fuse circuit and relay checks find the resistance and bad contacts that a scan tool cannot see. For modern vehicles there are CAN bus, module power, sensor signal and actuator command tests, and removed alternators and starters can be bench tested before anyone decides on a repair.
What the meter shows
“The scan is where we start, not where we stop,” said V-Auto’s diagnostic technician. “We see a lot of cars where the code points at a sensor and the real problem is an earth strap gone green with corrosion. Salt air near the coast does that. Five minutes with a meter on the earth points saves a customer from buying a sensor they didn’t need.”
The workshop also handles no start, hard start and misfire diagnosis, cooling fan, lighting and trailer wiring tests, and immobiliser circuit checks. Wiring is repaired with the correct gauge cable, secured joints and protection against vibration and moisture, which matters on fleet vans that spend all day on rough roads.
Fitments that do not cause the next fault
V-Auto fits trackers, dashcams, reverse cameras, park sensors and auxiliary lights with fused feeds, proper earthing and tidy cable routing, then checks the installation before the vehicle leaves the bay.
Workshop testing suits faults that need deeper tracing or a controlled charging test. Mobile call-outs cover Cape Town, Bellville, Milnerton, Somerset West, Paarl, Brackenfell and Durbanville for vehicles that will not start where they are parked. Bookings are made through the V-Auto website.
