AKM and Associates is quietly making strides in the engineering sector in SA

Nearly over the past two decades, AKM and Associates has become the go to specialist company for electrical and mechanical engineering services in Eastern Cape. Spearheaded by an electrical engineer and businesswoman Fezeka Mvulana, AKM and Associates has a proven track record in delivering great results and some of their projects have received special recognition from industry institutions.

Originally Albrecht Knight Mvulana & Associates, the enterprise was established by four partners in 2003. Three of the partners in the business resigned in 2017 leaving Mvulana to be the sole managing member of the corporation. She kept the acronym AKM and Associates and forged ahead.

The company is a highly experienced and well respected electrical and mechanical consulting engineering practice with over 90 years of engineering experience in the management team.

AKM and Associates was part of the East London based professional services consortium Ciba Consortium which was appointed by the Department of Arts and Culture to design the National Literary Museum in Grahamstown. Ciba comprised of Intsika Architects (Architectural), Bisiwe van Niekerk (Quantity Surveying), Camdekon Engineers (Civil and Structural Engineering) and AKM and Associates (Electrical and Mechanical Engineering).

The consortium received recognition from the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) for their Green Star 5-Star Rating: South African Excellence: Design: Public and Education Buildings. And the project received a further Leadership Award by the GBCSA, Runner up Highest Points scoring building in South Africa 2013/2014.

“We were filled with joy after hearing the news. The museum was a flagship as it was the first government project in the country aiming to achieve above 3-Star recognition with the GBCSA. The team’s mandate was to get 4 stars, the 5-Star rating was an over achievement” said Fezeka Mvulana, Managing Member of AKM and Associates.

Like most businesses in the built environment industry, AKM and Associates was severely impacted by the on-going Covid-19 pandemic but being part of the Hatch supplier development programme helped the business tremendously.

“Through the programme we were able to receive financial and continual development support. And we also leveraged Hatch’s virtual support and utilised the information they shared to help navigate the challenges we are faced with because of the on-going covid pandemic and the aftermath of the hard lockdown restrictions,” said Mvulana.

The programme’s objective is to provide business support and development, skills development as well as building new capabilities and capacity in small businesses.

Flagstaff Community Health Centre, Matatiele Council Chambers, Office of the Premier and the new Umzimvubu Municipal Offices are some of the most notable projects AKM and Associates has worked on.
