Baywest support for new Bethelsdorp day clinic

Financial support helps We Care centre with much-needed project

(June 2014) Much-needed support from the Baywest Mall and the principal contractor on the R1.7bn development, Murray & Roberts Buildings, has helped the We Care Community Centre in Bethelsdorp towards opening a vital Wellness Day Clinic in the Northern Areas.

A donation of R30,000 has been used by the We Care non-profit organisation (NPO) for crucial HIV/Aids awareness campaigns in the area, and also for the training of nurses and for medical equipment for the special day clinic.

We Care CEO Ashlene Arends said the funding had gone a long way in assisting the centre.

“When we formed a Senior Citizens Club, residents in the area told us that they have to wait all day at the government clinics to receive medication and to be seen by a doctor,” said Arends. “We saw a need for a wellness day clinic, and we have been slowly working towards making that a reality.”

The clinic was on course to open in August, weekdays from 7am to 6pm, she said.

Funding from Murray & Roberts Buildings and Baywest has also gone towards training six nurses, buying uniforms, and purchasing medical equipment such as a patient examination bed, HIV Testers and a blood pressure machine.

Murray & Roberts Buildings Commercial Manager, Mark Belman, said such financial support was important for Nelson Mandela Bay NGOs.

“It’s clear that this is an important need in the community and the We Care Centre has been very diligent in how it has spent the donation,” said Belman. “It’s heartening to see the positive role this centre has in the community.”

Wanda Ferreira, of Murray & Roberts Buildings, oversaw the donation on behalf of Baywest and Murray & Roberts Buildings to make sure all funding are being utilise as indicated in the proposals.

“For us it was important to make a real difference in the community, and helping towards the opening of this We Care Wellness Day Centre is one such need,” said Ferreira.

“The HIV/Aids awareness campaigns have also been a huge success, so we hope to maintain our relationship with this community going forward.”

Baywest MD, Gavin Blows, said that the development of Baywest City over the next 15 years would not only create much needed jobs in the region, but also meant that the developers, Abacus Asset Management and Billion Group, as well as Building Contractors, could continue to help communities in need.

Arends said the We Care Centre received no government funding and was wholly reliant on donations from the public and businesses.
