Do You Believe in Fate?

The pearl of the Cape Summer Season, the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate kicked off 2014’s racing with its Blue and White elegance. The feature race of the day was won by the good looking son of Lammerskraal Stud’s late Champion sire, Western Winter for the Dean Kannemeyer yard and Lady Christine Laidlaw. The Maine Chance Paddock Stakes were won in gutsy fashion by the diminutive Beach Beauty and in an exciting Grade 2 Peninsula Handicap, the very striking Jet Master colt, Master of my Fate made it six wins on the trot, from only seven starts and stamped himself as a strong contender for this Saturday’s J&B Met.

Out of the Varsfontein Stud mare Promisefrommyheart, Master of my Fate was the top priced yearling at the Emperor’s Palace National Yearling Sale in 2011 and has the pedigree of a superstar.

The 37th running of the J&B Met takes place at Kenilworth Racecourse on Saturday. A star-studded event on both the Thoroughbred race horse and social calendar, the theme for this year is Made to Conquor.

Just who will conquer the big race remains to be seen but for a few personal tips, we would suggest looking to Master of my Fate, Cape Town Noir, Jackson, Yorker and Whiteline Fever. Although in horse racing there are always surprises and many a wise man has been heard to say that: “horses will make fools of us.” That is part of the magic of horse racing, the excitement and thrill of picking a winner whether one studies the form and places an exotic bet on a number of horses or sticks to the simple win and place bet on a horse that takes your fancy, whatever the reason.

At the end of the day, while the fashions may catch the eye and the whiskey flow freely, it is all about the horses and the emotion that they are able to stir in us humans. There is nothing more majestic than a Thoroughbred at full stretch, racing towards the finish and the thrill of being a part of that never wanes.

The other two feature events on the day are the Investec Cape Derby and the Klawervlei Majorca Stakes, in which one must keep an eye on the diminutive Beach Beauty. Tiny she may be but she has the heart of a lion!
