South Africa’s annual 2-day international music conference is back in its 7th year where musicians will get to leverage from shared knowledge by music industry thought leaders at Academy of Sound Engineering, De Roos Street , Cape Town.
Music Exchange, a non-profit organization which was founded in 2009, has grown over the years to become one of the most sought-after music conferences in the country, as it annually celebrates the growth of musicians. Fostering economic sustainability through brand partnerships, management and mentorship, Music Exchange aims to better the South African music, film and entertainment industry through training and skill development for musicians.
In a music market that has been on the decline for many years, it is believed that we have reached the inflection point and that, if piracy can be overcome, massive opportunities exists for those willing to invest at this stage. The IFPI reported that digital income last year accounted for half the global recorded music industry’s annual revenue for the first time. Further growth in streaming more than offset a 20.5% decline in downloads and a 7.6% decline in physical revenue.
This brings into the picture one of the key issues speakers will be addressing at the conference, including the COO of TurnUp Music, Thabiet Allie. Among other subjects to be addressed, he will be speaking about SA’s locally built music platform, TurnUp Music, which in collaboration with Tencent’s newly launched music streaming service, JOOX, is attacking the issue of piracy by helping artists gain a stronger voice across digital platforms.
Most digital services are focused on international music, but both TurnUp Music and Joox are strongly focused on local talent. The objective of this collaboration is to promote local talent, while creating opportunities for artists through new innovative marketing initiatives and the creation of additional revenue streams.
There has been several successes since the inception of the conference and one of them is a South African electronic band, Goodluck, launching their debut album using principles learned at the conference, making Music Exchange the go to event for first hand industry information for musicians.
The conference is set to take place over two days, on Saturday, the 9th as well as on Sunday, the 10th of September 2017 at the Academy of Sound Engineering, Cape Town. Tickets are available on Webtickets for R250 per day, the weekend pass being priced at R400.
