If you have handbags lying on a shelf collecting dust or you are looking for a way to contribute positively to Women’s Month here’s the perfect solution.
Highlighting the challenges and achievements of the women of South Africa in August, this is a time when everyone has the opportunity to show support for some of the issues facing women across the country. Eben Lassen, General Manager of the Three Cities Bantry Bay Suite Hotel in Cape Town was looking for a project with which to partner as their contribution and was introduced to The Handbag Project by an industry colleague.
The Handbag Project is a drive to provide a handbag with essential toiletries to rape victims for use during the initial reporting process at the police station and after DNA testing at the hospital. Working with this innovative scheme, founded by Durbanite, Jes Foord, all Capetonians are invited to drop new or used handbags into the Hotel in Alexander Street in Bantry Bay during this month.
”During the month of August we urge the public to drop handbags with toiletry items at the Three Cities Bantry Bay Suite Hotel. A collection box will be in the
foyer and items can be dropped at any time. At the end of the month we will host an afternoon tea where entry is a filled handbag. All the handbags collected will be delivered to the Karl Bremer Hospital’s Thuthuzela Centre. Says Lassen, “People who donate are asked to write a note of encouragement and place it in the handbag. The message goes a long way to offer comfort and support to these victims.“
It would be greatly appreciated if handbag donations also include a few items, but an empty handbag is of great help as well. Bags can be suitable for women, men and children. Should you wish to donate a bulk of certain items and not individual bags, this would be welcomed.
List of items: Face Cloth, Panties (small, medium or large), Sanitary Towels, Soap (liquid or bar), Body lotion (small), Tooth Paste, Tooth Brush, Shampoo (small or
decanted), Deodorant, Comb, Tissues, Chocolate, Hair clips/Bands, Small soft toy, Note–words of comfort/care, Bag–to place the above items in. No used
items please.
To close off the month and celebrate the partnership diarise Friday 29 August when the hotel will be hosting a late afternoon tea and live music at 15h30.
