TOKARA viticulturist Aidan Morton and winemaker Stuart Botha

TOKARA excels for 3rd consecutive year at 10 Year Old Wine Awards – TOKARA, the acclaimed family owned Stellenbosch wine estate, has excelled as a top preforming cellar at the 10 Year Old Wine Awards 2019 for the third consecutive year.

Showing its prowess as a world class producer of red and white wines of remarkable ageability and consistency, TOKARA was ranked second highest performer overall with 90 points or more awarded to all five of its wines entered in the competition this year. Tokara had the highest scoring Chardonnay, White Blend and joint-highest Red Blend with all three category winners scoring 93 on the 100-point scale.

The competition, held annually under the Winemag.co.za banner to showcase age-worthy South African wines, attracted a record of 92 entries from the 2009 vintage, hailed widely as one of the greatest vintages in recent history.

The five TOKARA 2009 wines awarded 90 points or higher are the Reserve Collection Chardonnay, Directors Reserve White and Directors Reserve Red all scoring 93/100, followed by the Reserve Collection Noble Late Harvest and Reserve Collection Elgin Sauvignon Blanc, both on 90 points.

“This is Tokara’s third foray into the 10 Year Old Wine Awards. We pride ourselves not only on the consistency and longevity of our wines but also of our people. Our viticulturist Aidan Morton is the scientist behind our vineyards and coupled with the youthful exuberance of Stuart Botha in the cellar, it is a perfect match,” says Karl Lambour, TOKARA General Manager.

These award winning wines are a reflection of everything the estate stands for – refinement, elegance and balance and above all, are a true expression of place.

“The site specific nature of our wines is testament to the superb terroir of Stellenbosch and Elgin where our vineyards flourish. We are blessed with grapes that offer us intensity and aromatic expression in our white wines and tannic persistence in our reds,” adds Lambour.

Tasting notes of the three TOKARA category winners by the 10 Year Old Wine Awards 2019 judging panel:

Tokara Reserve Collection Stellenbosch Chardonnay 2009 – 93 points
Alc: 14.5% RS: 2.3g/l TA: 6.5g/l pH: 3.37
Fermented and matured in French oak, 35% new. Slight reduction before citrus, peach plus toasty oak – still remarkably primary. The palate is rich and full – good depth of fruit and bright acidity before a savoury finish. Flavourful and rather beguiling.

Tokara Director’s Reserve White 2009 – 93 points
Alc: 14.04% RS: 2g/l TA: 7.7g/l pH: 3.3
70% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Semillon. Fermented and matured for nine months in 400-litre French oak barrels, 26% new. A complex nose with top notes of fynbos, hay and floral perfume before lime, apple and peach plus a little oak spice. Lovely pure fruit, driving acidity and a long, dry finish. Rich but very well balanced.

Tokara Director’s Reserve Red 2009 – 93 points
Alc: 15.15% RS: 2.2g/l TA: 6.5g/l pH: 3.59
78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petit Verdot, 5% Merlot and 5% Malbec. Matured for 20 months in French oak, 76% new. Intense black in colour. Cassis and some herbal character to go with toasty oak and spice. Pure fruit, fresh acidity and firm but fine tannins. Full, deep and still youthful.
