United Nations honours the Tag Rugby Association

The Tag Rugby® Association is honoured to have received a letter of support from the Special Advisor to the Secretary-General of the United Nations on Sport for Development and Peace.

Since 1992, the Tag Rugby® Association has promoted sport for development on a grassroots level in South African townships, targeting primarily children and youth of all ages. ‘Our programmes focus on getting children off the streets and away from ills by raising awareness on the risks of drugs and crime through sport.’ said Stuart Mc Connell of Tag Rugby®, which is an official associate member of the South African Rugby Union.

Tag Rugby®, is a non-contact team sport and used as a vehicle to promote sports for development and peace. The youngsters learn solidarity, respect, fairness and teamwork. The organisation has recently been invited to start their programme in two prisons in the Cape Town area, training offenders in how to teach sport, fulfill administration and get coaching qualifications to contribute to their reintegration into society and increase their employment chances in the field of sports.

The Tag Rugby® Association is a successful example for how sport can get both boys and girls physically active whilst promoting peace, solidarity, anti-drugs and anti-crime messages.

Mr Wilfred Lemke, the Under-General-Secretary, said that he hopes that this special project will continue its outstanding efforts.
