Managing Director of Talksure Trading, Jacques de Beer, is a veteran entrepreneur and businessman with extensive experience in the financial services industry. Jacques’ corporate experience packs a punch, working in management for the likes of Anglo American, the Nedcor Group, Nedbank, Absa and Barclays. His own ventures have included successfully launching and driving start-ups in various industries throughout his career.
“I’ve had a long and diverse career,” says Jacques, “now I use sound knowledge and experience to grow entrepreneurial businesses with a corporate flair.”
Jacques moved to Umhlanga from Johannesburg in 2015 to take up his position at Talksure, a role that’s continually evolving as the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and Financial Services contact centre grows rapidly. Developed from a smaller business into a group of companies, Jacques says that his job is a balancing act between keeping the company moving forward without losing track of its current needs.
Testament to his leadership and passionate staff, Talksure recently won gold for the Top Ranking Performers at the Contact Centre World Awards. In 2017, they won Best Sales Manager and in 2016 they walked away with the Industry Award for the Best Domestic Outsourcing Contact Centre.
With Talksure’s aim to create new partnerships and become innovators in the industry, Jacques is ready to take the business to the next level. He describes himself as a goal-orientated leader who enjoys establishing a vision and encouraging his team to realise it. “It’s rewarding to see them achieve it,” explains Jacques, “You’re taking something that didn’t exist and willing it into reality.”
Jacques is passionate about empowering individuals to take pride and responsibility in their work as well as further their education. Last year 118 individuals completed learnerships through Talksure. This year, 51 employed staff are on learnerships, 50 on unemployed learnerships and a further 40 unemployed on work readiness accredited training.
This ethos of upliftment extends outside of the company too. Talksure invests in local social development initiatives. “I believe that giving brings more blessings than receiving,” says Jacques, “It’s about being a good person, not just a good corporate.”
Alongside his BComm degree, MBA and Masters in E-Commerce, Jacques has a keen interest in psychology and sociology and believes that the work environment provides plenty of opportunity for personal development. “You need to be self-aware and able to understand your own personal weaknesses and sort them out. If you can’t manage those things, you’ll never be able to do good unto others in the workplace.”
This self-awareness helps Jacques with the tougher aspects of his job, including managing stress and anxiety. “After two rounds of cancer,” he says, “I’ve learned to shift my perspective – a big presentation or difficult confrontation won’t kill you.” Jacques also says that leaders often fail in giving honest and critical feedback to staff about the standard of their work, a responsibility he doesn’t take lightly.
Talksure is clearly his focus right now but Jacques also recognises the need for balance. He spends his free time with his wife and four boys and has an eclectic list of hobbies, including astronomy, horse-riding, cycling and organic farming. “At times you work hard, late into the night and other times you need to be with your family,” he says, “It’s also about taking care of your health, finances, spiritual needs and interpersonal relationships.”
