Johannesburg, November 26, 2024: Winston Churchill was born on 30 November 1874, making this week a fitting moment to celebrate his life and legacy, from his years as a soldier and statesman to his leadership during the Second World War and beyond. In 2002, the BBC conducted a survey to crown the greatest Briton of all time, with Churchill taking the top spot. The 150th-anniversary is sparking a renewed interest in Churchill memorabilia, with unique collectable stamps and coins being issued.

In July 1965, Churchill was the first contemporary individual to be featured on a British stamp and has been on several issues since then.
Joining the array of organisations commemorating the 150th anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill’s birth, The Royal Mint has unveiled a special £2 coin https://bit.ly/4i2QloH .This piece features Churchill’s iconic silhouette alongside his legendary declaration, “We shall never surrender.” The coin honours the legacy of one of Britain’s greatest leaders. It is a must-have for history and numismatic enthusiasts alike. Across decades, mints worldwide have struck coins commemorating the wartime leader, making Churchill a prominent figure in numismatic circles. The story begins in 1965, the year of Churchill’s passing. The Royal Mint issued the world’s first commemorative crown featuring a commoner, showcasing Churchill’s profile opposite Queen Elizabeth II. Fast forward to 2015, when the Royal Mint celebrated 50 years since Churchill’s death with a particular £5 coin. Featuring an engraving of Churchill’s iconic portrait, this coin merged modern minting techniques with historical reverence. That same year, South Africa’s Mint paid tribute with a Winston Churchill Launch Set.
During the Second Boer War (1899–1902), Winston Churchill initially travelled to South Africa as a war correspondent. He became famous for his dramatic capture and subsequent escape from Boer forces and his contributions as a commissioned officer with the South African Light Horse regiment. His actions in battles, such as Diamond Hill in June 1900, earned him recognition, including the Queen’s South Africa Medal.
