The art of Business is changing. Traditional methodologies are being revised. The world is looking for a new definition of how we conduct our working world. Understanding of organisational structure and management of people, processes and product are key but it is creativity, design thinking, innovation and technology that will drive our economy and provide a platform for addressing the challenges and opportunities our world presents now and in the future.” says Helen Bührs, Managing Director of Inscape Education Group as she speaks about one of the newest streams offered by the institution to address careers of the future.
With this thinking and the knowledge of how design can impact on the evolution of Business, Inscape introduced the Bachelor of Design degree specialising in Ideation, the first of its kind in South Africa. The curriculum has been the brainchild of the Inscape Academic Team with support from leading industry players already active in the field of innovation, technology and industrial psychology and engineering.
The product of the curriculum, an idea generator and design researcher, understands global issues and wants to debate them. They are curiously intellectual, highly collaborative and good at communicating. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team to identify needs and requirements, define strategy and solve problems for clients. Helen confirms that the current Ideation students at Inscape are a self-motivated, risk taking, confident group of students who explore easily, are not afraid of failure and embrace challenges with excitement and a positive can-do attitude.
In 2017 Inscape will realise its first cohort of graduates from the Ideation stream of the Bachelor of Design qualification. In preparation for their entry into the market, the students complete six weeks of work integrated learning. The feedback received from the host companies has affirmed the need for such a programme to address challenges and opportunities presented by the current world and that of the future.
Jennifer Sutherland, Client Experience Transformation from Standard Bank, had this to share “We were extremely excited when we first heard about the Ideation stream being run by Inscape. The curriculum covers a wide variety of skills and methodologies that we feel are vital for companies (large and small) wanting to succeed in future. It also aligns very closely to Standard Bank’s approach to innovation and problem solving, so when we were offered the opportunity to host some students, we naturally jumped at the chance. Teboho, Alana and Resh hit the ground running with very little guidance and instruction required. They got involved in existing projects with great enthusiasm but we also gave them their own, very broadly scoped project that they handled exceptionally well. They have brought new skills and fresh thinking to our team, and have infused us with extra energy. We will definitely consider hosting more students from Inscape in the future”.
Stephanie Vajda, from Frontier Lab, an Agency based in Cape Town said, “Companies hire us to conceptualize, validate, build and take digital products to market. This aligns exactly with what Inscape is teaching in their ideation course, essentially problem solving.”
Lisa Parkes, Program Manager at the Human Capital Development Craft and Design Institute says, “having the Inscape Interns with us has added tremendous value to the project teams in which they worked as they brought fresh eyes and ideas into the process. They were already skilled in innovative planning and process design and had a knack in synthesizing information and ideas into visual maps. We have thoroughly enjoyed having them with us and being able to offer an opportunity to help shape their learning journey. The Craft and Design Institute’s Human Capital Development Programme aims to promote the understanding and uptake of design in business, the public sector and in education to improve local products, services and systems.”
