GLAD is well-known for its multi-purpose products which are convenient to use in your home, designed to make your life easier. We’d like to share with you some interesting food facts and tips to make your life even easier.
1. Planning meals
FACT: planning meals in advance is the best way to save money, give your family a balanced diet and get organised for the week ahead.
TIP: write a meal plan for the week and take it with you to the supermarket so you know exactly what to buy. When you get home, stick it on your fridge so you can keep track as the week goes on.
2. Wrapping vegetables
FACT: ever wondered why cucumbers are often covered with plastic? Wrapping vegetables protects them from the high humidity in your fridge, which helps them to stay fresher for longer – and a wrapped cucumber loses only 1.5% of its water over two weeks, rather than losing 16.5% in two weeks when it’s exposed, making it wilted and inedible.
TIP: covering cut fruit with GLAD Cling Wrap will seal in up to 99% of their moisture (up to 1.5 x or 50% improvement in GLAD cling film to GLAD cling film seal) and keep them fresh for up to three times longer (compared to no wrap after 7 days on selected foods), so you have more time to enjoy them.
3. Storing items
FACT: many people forget to keep an eye on some of the longer-term storage items in the fridge and pantry, especially food that comes in bottles and jars.
TIP: place pieces of GLAD Wrap over the tops of the opened jars, and then tightly screw the lid back on. This will create an extra seal and help you to make your condiments and sauces go a little further.
4. In the fridge
FACT: most fresh food is best covered in plastic and stored in the fridge, but some items should be stored at room temperature and only put in the fridge once they are ripe or have been cut.
TIP: keep tomatoes on your counter out of direct sunlight and basil in a cup of water covered loosely with a GLAD food bag at room temperature. Potatoes, onions and garlic go in breathable bags in your pantry – but keep them apart because together they will go off more quickly.
5. Herbs and spices
FACT: often the items that are most likely to go to waste in a kitchen are the herbs, spices and flavour enhancing ingredients that are only ever used in small quantities and then allowed to go to waste.
TIP: ingredients such as shallots, red chilli, lemons and fresh bay leaves can be trimmed and stored in a small Snap Lock bag that has had the air squeezed out before sealing. They can last in the freezer for several months.
