New insights show that 25% of couples resort to separate beds due to sleep disturbances—but there’s a better solution
South Africa – Sleep disturbance between partners has become one of the most common yet under-discussed challenges in relationships. Research from the National Sleep Foundation reveals that a quarter of couples sleep in separate beds specifically to avoid disrupting each other’s rest, whilst studies from Paracelsus Private Medical University demonstrate a direct link between poor sleep quality and diminished relationship satisfaction.
Bed King, South Africa’s leading sleep technology retailer, addresses this widespread issue with scientific insights into how couples can stop disturbing each other at night whilst maintaining the intimacy of sharing a bed.
The primary culprit behind couples’ sleep disruption is motion transfer—the ripple effect that occurs when one partner’s movement travels across the mattress to the other side. Traditional spring mattresses with interconnected coils function like trampolines, sending vibrations across the entire bed with every shift and turn. Given that the average adult moves 40-60 times per night, these constant micro-disruptions fragment sleep cycles and prevent partners from reaching the deep, restorative sleep stages their bodies require.
The solution combines two critical elements: adequate space and advanced technology. On a standard double bed measuring 137cm wide, each partner has just 68.5cm of personal space—narrower than a single bed. Upgrading to a king size bed provides 183cm of width, giving each person 91.5cm of sleeping zone whilst staying close.
However, size alone isn’t enough. Bed King’s Comfort Solutions® Technology features individually wrapped pocket springs that operate independently within fabric pockets. Unlike traditional interconnected coils, these advanced systems respond only to direct pressure, keeping movement localised rather than rippling across the mattress. This delivers what sleep experts call “zero motion transfer”—allowing each partner to move freely throughout the night without disturbing the other.
The impact extends beyond better rest. A University of California, Berkeley study published in Social Psychological and Personality Science found that sleep-deprived individuals feel less appreciated by partners and show less appreciation in return, whilst well-rested couples report greater relationship satisfaction and improved conflict resolution.
Bed King’s Comfort Solutions Lab uses 1,600 pressure sensors to create personalised sleep codes for each individual, taking the guesswork out of finding the right mattress for couples with different needs.
