Beyond the Track: A Champion’s Mental Health Insights for Young Athletes

(MyPR.co.za) October 30, 2024 By //  by Nhlalenhle Filed Under: Sports Edit This Article

As South Africa observes Mental Health Awareness Month this October, the importance of mental wellness, particularly for young athletes, is under the spotlight. Clint Seller, 10-time South African Superbike Champion and leader of the King Price Xtreme racing team, emphasises that mental health training is just as critical as physical preparation for young Athletes.

Recent years have seen top athletes like Naomi Osaka, Simone Biles, Lewis Hamilton and Michael Phelps speaking openly about the pressures they face. But this isn’t just a concern for world-class sportspeople. Athletes at all levels, especially younger ones, also experience the psychological strain that comes with competitive pressure.

There’s a massive focus on results in top-level sports. But, says Seller, you can’t tie your mental health to your results. “Racing, like most sports, comes with more losses than wins. I may hold 10 consecutive national titles, but bear in mind that I’ve been racing since I was 16.”

For Seller, training, fitness and maintaining balance in life are key to staying physically and mentally strong. Exercise has long been recognised as crucial for preventing diseases, and evidence now shows that regular exercise also has significant benefits for mental health. It can boost self-esteem, reduce anxiety and stress levels, and help you to bounce back stronger when you’re struggling.

Reflecting on his own recent injury – a broken wrist that required surgery – Seller reveals that he stayed positive through the recovery process by exercising as much as he was able to and focusing on maintaining a constructive mindset. He makes a practice of visualising the chequered flag, the victory lap, and reliving how they make him feel. Then, he puts in the hard work necessary to achieve that feeling.

The King Price Xtreme team is one of the youngest on the racing circuit, and Seller has made it a priority to foster a supportive environment for the youngsters. As a mentor, Seller is committed to his young team’s overall well-being. The youngsters also have a strong family support structure, with their dad involved in every aspect of their training and keeping them grounded. In addition, they’re encouraged to live well-rounded lives and to have hobbies and passions outside of their sport. For his part, Seller has a regular 9-to-5 job that keeps him grounded and teaches lessons that he implements across all aspects of his life: Family, work, and racing.

“When I was coming up in the sport, it was a case of ‘cowboys don’t cry’ but we now know better,” he says. “Today, we’re teaching our young athletes to use coping mechanisms for stress and to feel confident asking for help when they need it.”

As more athletes and sports teams embrace the need for mental health support, Seller’s message resonates: “Success isn’t just about winning races; it’s about maintaining balance, building resilience, and prioritising mental wellbeing, both on and off the track.”
