If I had R1.00 for every call from a Neanderthal glorifying a vehicle fire supposedly set off by a Lithium Ion Battery I would be able to buy a Tesla Cybertruck for cash…

That is what one gets for being an early adopter and brand evangelist for renewable energy!

But, maybe ‘brand evangelist’ is slightly incorrect as through Straton Solar I do get a small benefit for that.

In response to the fire worries (way out of proportion I would say) the manufacturing market has provided a solution – Sodium Ion batteries are less likely to spark a runaway fire, use abundant resources (salt) and are becoming more main stream.

I doubt that they will find adoption into Electrical Vehicles within this year – solely based on weight. A 10 kW Sodium Ion battery will typically weight around 125 kilograms whilst a 10 kW Lithium Ion battery will weigh around 90 kg.

Because sodium atoms are physically larger and roughly three times heavier than lithium atoms at the atomic level, Sodium-Ion batteries require more mass and space to store the exact same amount of energy.

The Galvani battery module utilizes sodium-ion technology, which offers superior temperature resilience and safety at a lower environmental impact, while Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) remains the industry standard for higher energy density and longer cycle life.

Core Trade-Offs to Consider

Environmental and Supply Chain Sustainability: Sodium-Ion Benefit: Sodium is globally abundant and extracted sustainably from rock salt or seawater. It completely eliminates dependence on critical lithium supply chains.

LFP Drawback: While LFP avoids toxic cobalt and nickel, it still relies heavily on lithium mining, which faces volatile pricing and high environmental extraction costs.

Extreme Weather Performance: Sodium-Ion Benefit: The Galvani module actively charges down to -20°C and discharges down to -30°C without capacity degradation. This makes it ideal for unheated outdoor installations in freezing climates.

LFP Drawback: Standard LFP batteries cannot safely charge below 0°C without internal heating elements, which consume stored energy and reduce overall system efficiency.

Footprint and Weight: LFP Benefit: LFP chemistry packs more energy into a smaller, lighter footprint.

Sodium-Ion Drawback: Sodium cells are physically larger and heavier for the same capacity. The Galvani module weighs 59 kg for 4.5 kWh, making it heavier to transport and install compared to equivalent LFP modules.

CONS

Cons of Sodium-Ion (Galvani Module)

Heavy physical footprint: It weighs 59 kg for just 4.5 kWh of capacity, requiring robust mounting and multiple people for installation.

Lower energy density: It requires significantly more physical wall or floor space than lithium options to achieve the same total household storage.

Immature market ecosystem: Being a newer technology, it works with a much narrower selection of compatible hybrid inverters and installers.

Lower cycle life: Sodium-ion chemistry generally degrades slightly faster over thousands of cycles compared to top-tier LFP alternatives.

Unproven long-term field data: Lacks the decade-long track record of real-world residential use that lithium systems possess.

Cons of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP)

Severe cold weather limits: It cannot safely charge at sub-freezing temperatures (\(<0^{\circ }\text{C}\)) without dedicated, energy-consuming internal heaters.

Volatile supply chains: Manufacturing relies heavily on lithium mining, making the technology vulnerable to global geopolitical and resource pricing shocks.

Higher environmental footprint: The extraction of lithium requires massive quantities of water and carries a heavier ecological impact than harvesting sodium.

Risk of deep discharge damage: Leaving an LFP battery completely depleted at 0% for extended periods can permanently brick or damage the cells.

Higher upfront raw material costs: Lithium is fundamentally scarcer than sodium, keeping the baseline material costs structurally higher over time.

PROS

Pros of Sodium-Ion (Galvani Module)

Exceptional cold performance: Charges safely down to -20°C and discharges down to -30°C without requiring power-draining internal heaters.

Superior thermal safety: Highly stable chemistry with virtually zero risk of thermal runaway or fire, even if punctured or short-circuited.

Eco-friendly materials: Uses earth-abundant sodium derived from common salt, completely bypassing the environmental damage of lithium mining.

Deep discharge tolerance: Can be discharged fully to 0% or stored at zero voltage without causing structural damage to the cells.

Long-term cost potential: Abundant raw materials mean production costs are structurally insulated from global mineral shortages.

Pros of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP)

High energy density: Packs maximum storage capacity into a compact, space-saving footprint that fits easily into tight indoor spaces.

Proven market longevity: Backed by over a decade of real-world residential data, ensuring high reliability and predictable performance.

Massive inverter compatibility: Integrates seamlessly with almost every major hybrid inverter brand and smart home ecosystem on the market.

Exceptional cycle life: Regularly delivers 6,000+ cycles at 80% depth of discharge, offering a longer operational lifespan before degradation.

Widespread installer network: Virtually any solar professional is fully trained and certified to install, service, and warranty LFP systems.

Are there any sodium ion batteries available in South Africa?

Yes, sodium-ion batteries are available in South Africa, though the residential solar market remains dominated by standard Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) options. Early adopters can purchase sodium-ion solutions for specific backup, automotive, and backup power configurations through specialized electronics and energy distributors.

Pricing Comparison

10Kw Lithium Ion Batteries range in price from R19 000 to R38 000. All excluding installation.

Factory prices (from China) for Sodium Ion batteries range in price from R9 500 to R21 750 – excluding shipping and import duties which can double the sticker price – depending on a number of factors. Importer, wholesaler and Retailer mark-up will still need to be added.

At present one can buy a Tewaycell branded 10Kw Sodium Ion Battery from a local supplier for around R68 000 with a lead time of around 3 months.
