Government, Municipality and Councilor Fail to Deliver on Aid, Leaving Families Homeless and Desperate.

The Molokohlo River has long been a ticking time bomb, with flooding a recurring nightmare for residents. For years, the community has warned of the danger posed by the river’s neglect. Yet, their cries have fallen on deaf ears. The government’s inaction has emboldened the river, which has shifted closer to people’s homes, making it a ticking bomb waiting to unleash its fury.

In the aftermath of the devastating floods that ravaged the Molokohlo River area in April 2022, residents were left reeling from the destruction. The river, which had become a dumping site, overflowed its banks and claimed lives causing widespread damage to homes and displacement of families which left the residents in a state of constant fear. The government and municipality promised aid and support, but those promises have proven to be empty.

One year later, the situation remains the same. Only one family has received assistance, and the remaining three families who lost their homes are still struggling to find stable housing. One family has been placed to take shelter at the community hall since 2022, while another is living in a partially destroyed home. The third family is currently residing in a shack offered by a good Samaritan.

Despite numerous visits from government officials and promises of aid, the families have been left in the dark. The councilors lack of clear communication has only added to the frustrations. With no income besides the SASA Grant money, these families are desperate for help. Heavy rainfall triggers anxiety and sleepless nights, as residents are unsure what the next downpour will bring. The lack of means to relocate to safer areas has made them hostage to the river’s whims.
