The 2nd Annual Global Logistics in Mining Forum kicked off today at the Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel, Sandton in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The forum is sponsored by leading service providers like Neovia (Gold Sponsor), Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (Silver Sponsor) and Schneider Electric (Associate Sponsor). The conference opened with a speech from the event chairman Brenda Horne-Ferreira, Founder and Past Chief Executive Officer of the Maputo Corridor Logistics Initiative (MCLI)
Delivering the keynote presentation was Dr. Mathews Phosa, Chairman of Maputo Corridor Logistics Initiative (MCLI). MCLI is a non-profit organisation consisting of infrastructure investors, service providers and stakeholders from Mozambique, South Africa and Swaziland who are focused on the promotion and further development of the Maputo Development Corridor (MDC) as the region’s primary logistics transportation route.
Post the opening keynote, the attendees at the conference participated at round table discussions lead by speakers representing Arcelor Mittal, Richards Bay Coal Terminal, Transnet Freight Rail, Vale, Neovia amongst others. The round table discussions highlighted strategies to shape and improve road/rail/port infrastructure and efficiency ensuring logistics reliability in greenfield sites.
Some topics covered on day one included mine-to-port logistics optimization presented by Nosipho Damasane, CEO – Richards Bay Coal Terminal (South Africa) and ‘Logistics in remote and underdeveloped countries’ presented by Hermann Siegling, Group Supply Chain Manager at Debswana (Botswana). Delegates also heard from Marc Ramsay, Schneider Electric (South Africa) sharing his insights on ‘Integrating and optimizing your business for productivity Improvement and cost reduction’.
Day two will feature panel discussions on ‘Investing in state of the art technologies to have an integrated logistics operation’ and ‘Having the right 3PL to address the knowledge gap’. Day two will also see Sanet Jacobs, Metorex (Pty) Limited (South Africa) present a case study on Practical application of TCO model and Logistics along with other presentations by speakers representing Tenova Minerals (Pty) Ltd, Kinross Gold Corporation (Canada), Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics
