The third meeting of the International Telecommunication Union’s Radio communication (ITU-R) Joint Task Group, held at the East London International Convention Centre from 22 July concluded Wednesday, 31 July. The ITU (International Telecommunication Union) is the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies and the meeting was attended by approximately four hundred delegates from around the world, including representatives of NASA and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
The Department of Communication hosted the meeting which Gift Buthelezi, Deputy Director General for ICT International Affairs and Trade in the Department of Communications, said had presented South Africa with the opportunity to champion and influence decisions relating to spectrum requirements for broadband. He further said that that the hosting of the joint task group would encourage greater participation from South Africa and from African continent.
Every three to four years, the ITU convenes a World Radio communication Conference (WRC), to revise the international Radio Regulations, an important international treaty that governs the use of the radio frequency spectrum and orbital slots. The Radio Regulations also provide for the allocation of frequency bands to radio communication services and set technical and regulatory conditions to promote interference free operations for radio equipment.
The last World Radio Conference (WRC-12) took place in Geneva, Switzerland in 2012 and the next one will be held in Geneva in November 2015. The ITU-R Joint Task Group forms a part of the preparatory meetings leading up to the next World Radio Conference.
David Botha, Chief of the Information and Telecommunication System Division and World Meteorological Information System (WIS) Project Manager said “I am very impressed with the facilities of the ELICC and believe that it offers international standards and facilities. We were very happy to have held the event here”
“One of the highlights of the conference was when one of the space stations flew over the convention centre on 30 July and could be clearly seen by all the delegates standing outside the ELICC,” said Eugene Oelofse, marketing manager of Premier Hotels and Resorts, which manages the ELICC. “The conference went off without any difficulties and it was fantastic to host such a prestigious and relevant event. We have been preparing for this meeting for weeks and are very happy that we have met the expectations of the delegates who attended,” Oelofse said.
Ends.
